Is the career outlook for any field not complete garbage at this point? I decided to major in CS and Math but the job market looks really fucking bleak. I'm pretty exhausted in general and the state of the market for new grads, as well as the general decline of the country, is making me extremely mad. I don't really know if I want to work in CS anymore, and the math major doesn't really give me any specific hard skills, which every entry level job seems to want. What do I do? I want to affect political change, which can obviously be done through technology, but the tech industry is falling apart. So where do I go?

Business is always a good choice. That job market is never rational because business people are all retarded and delusional. Majority of business roles produce zero value and are a net loss to the company but it doesn’t matter because they want to larp as important business grownups all day.

Kinda. I see recruiters saying the same stuff now, not just about a few industries but the whole job market. A lot of people are super desperate for work right now, so employers can afford to be very picky. There are hundreds of thousands of professionals with years of experience suddenly out of work and competing for entry level jobs. Guess where that leaves the people who would traditionally get those entry level jobs?

I don’t mean to be all doom and gloom and I genuinely wish the best for everyone here. But it’s hard to be optimistic when I’ve been looking for work for over a year and seen the depths of the absolute ugliness of employment and recruiter practices. It is the most dehumanizing and humiliating time to be a job seeker in all of my professional years (really only like 15 years, but you get the idea)

Anything where humans will still be required to supervise the AIs, or whose job uses AI tools. Also, jobs that produce goods and services that there is going to be much more need of in the future.

Several major developments are likely coming in the 2030s (IMO):

A cure for aging, but imperfect at first. Basically, immortality, but expensive at first. There will be a universal demand once everyone realizes it is no longer a pipedream. I predict riots in the streets once the masses realize that the rich will get it and they won't. Exciting times.

The Expanse will more or less be a thing. Someone is going to have to design, fix and manage the robots that build the needed infrastructure on Luna and beyond. Aside: Notice how big interstellar objects on hyperbolic trajectories appear every few years - three so far in eight years. They were probably coming forever bit it's only in recent years that our telescopes are good enough. We need more eyes out there to catch a closeup of the next one!

So jobs needed will be: medicine, aerospace, architecture/structural engineering, as well as pilots and problem solvers.

I should add that "medicine" encompasses elective procedures, of course. Suitably qualified humans will still be required to operate the eye surgery and advanced plastic/reconstructive surgery robots (uglies rejoice!), implanting hair follicles and teeth just right that no human hand can do.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is aggressively hiring.

imo, the only careers you can't go wrong with are doctor, nurse, accountant, and lawyer.
doctor and lawyer are tryhard, accountant just requires a BS and passing some exams, and then nursing you can do in community college.
i'm a millennial and fell for the STEM meme from back when.

I'm doing accounting. Nobody will allow their books to be done by an AI (even if they did there are many situations that require human fanangling aka lies). The whole point of a CPA is being able to certify the books were done right, even if a robot did them.
Accountants will inevitably all have to use AI tools, that much is certain, like what >>33679896 this anon said, but they aren't getting replaced by them (some researchers say it'll actually boost the # of people in the field, which i doubt but idk).

My theory for most jobs having the same outlook is that were offshoring and onshoring at the same time. Sending jobs to India & bringing Indians here on H-1Bs. All jobs are racing to the bottom in the current climate and everyone is fighting for scraps.

They only have two tech positions, I applied already but doubt I'll get anything. Don't want to be an enforcement officer.

I very luckily got into cyber security a few years ago before the meme blew up on social media. Now I get paid a 6 figure salary to ask companies if they've been doing annual reviews of their information security policy.

By the way I'm white but for every cyber IT job there are hundreds of pajeets applying, many of whom have actual experience, unlike you. Sorry.

It has been obvious for more than 20 years that every single college student in the world was majoring in CS. Certainly when you started 4 or 5 years ago it was evident that supply of new CS grads was alreafy exceeding demand.

Consider philosophy of political science with a minor in CS. If you’re a freshman, try out a bunch of stuff. Maybe study economics. Is your main motivation affecting political change, or building technology?
I think as you’re in the right half of the bell curve (the further right the better) you’ll be able to find work. In CS you’ll have to be even further right on the bell curve though. I’d focus on figuring out your motivations better. Also find out what you’re good at and how that might be different from what you like.
