I've heard stories of America's Medicaid system taking people's houses to cover their hospital bill.

How is that even possible? I thought if you get approved for Medicaid, then they pay for your hospital bills.

Why are they taking people's stuff?

isn't medicaid just health insurance? you have to pay a monthly fee for health insurance and if you don't pay then they can sue you and if you don't pay then either you can get seized, yeah
just like with not paying any other bill as long as you have any assets

Probably because Medicaid doesn't cover all the expenses. Or they don't cover certain hospitals. Who knows.

OK - the facts

Almost uniquely in the world, the US has no free health care. Everything from an aspirin to brain surgery has to be paid for, usually in advance. That's why a lot of people have insurance.

Medicaid (not Medicare, which is something else) is the nearest thing the US has to a NHS, a government-sponsored charity to pay for some very limited essential medical aid for those who can't afford it.

The only circumstances under which Medicaid would bill or sue someone are if fraud was committed - if they had the money and took the charity anyway

that's not true. Medicaid in many states "recovers" the money they spent on you from your estate.

Because if you left an estate you must have had assets and therefore committed fraud by taking Medicaid money you weren't entitled to

I don't get how this system works. In my country you are required to have health insurance and the insurance pays everything above a certain amount (a little over 300 euro but you can increase it if you want to pay less per month). Sure we have long waiting lists but being entitled to health insurance or not is simply not a thing here.

this, but legitimately and unironically. they convince the feeble and elderly that they need to sell their homes to they can pay off their medical debt, which is untrue.

That's not a thing that happens. At least not just from having hospital bills. I could see some imminent domain tomfoolery and the hospital not having to pay you for your land if you owe them money. Sounds like the plot from some 90's movie. And I don't know shit.

If we don't pay three hundred dollars a month to the government they come to our backyards and salt our gardens. When you eventually do get caught up they just stop actively salting your gardens. Can't grow anything there anymore though.

even in Star Trek the Replicators require an input of matter and energy, and there's even that doctor lady
how does the rest of the world create FREE health care beyond the technology of the Federation??

hospitals have to get paid or they can't pay for doctors or medicine, insurance is supposed to cover these costs, if you don't have insurance the hospital tries to collect payment some other way

>I've heard stories
Yeah I bet. I'm sure they're all 100% detailed accurate factual and true, just like everything on the internet.
Probably you heard a mish mash of stuff, Medicaid will pay for nursing home care if your assets are below $2000 so someone living in a nursing home for free WILL have to sell their home; later on they may hang out in a hospital for awhile but that doesn't mean "the hospital took their home", it just happened around the same time.

I'm assuming they would have been realistically denied Medicaid had they known they own a fucking home in the first place?
