Difficult Semester
I'm a 3rd year computer engineering student and I'm really struggling this semester due to a combination of anxiety and depression.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I'm depressed but I think it is, at least partially, a result of my social life taking a big hit recently. A good friend had to take the semester off because he's going through something (long story) and due to circumstances outside of his control it can be impossible to reach him for long periods of time. Additionally, a girl I met and got along with pretty well ended up ghosting me for several months only to tell me she no longer wanted to talk to me. I'm not really sure what happened and I doubt I'll get any kind of explanation. I've been pretty isolated since the start of the semester as a result.

I'm anxious because I've fallen behind and now I struggle to check my email and course websites. I struggle with anxiety and when I become anxious it can cripple me. I'm behind on both schoolwork and applying to internships. I've also missed 4 meetings for the design team I'm on so far. I believe I can catch up but it feels impossible for me to even look at my schoolwork and/or open my email as ridiculous as it sounds. I dread having to talk to said design team's executives about why I missed so many meeting.

One of my extended family members died in an accident around the start of the semester. It's not honorable, but I can probably use that to be allowed to submit all the assignments I must've of missed late. It's a shameful thing to do but it's the only way I can avoid losing huge chunks of my grade in all my courses.

How do I overcome my anxiety? What's the best way to catch up?

I have a history of crippling anxiety. I generally try to avoid putting myself in situations that make me anxious but idk how to manage anxiety.

I used to have anxiety problems until I stopped caring about the outcome of certain actions and things.
Not saying that you should stop giving a fuck all together, but just enjoy life. Accept that there are things you cannot change in life.

He's still going to get hired because he actually knows how to build computers, I would worry if he were a code monkey though.

make it a goal to figure out how to manage anxiety research. if you're smart enough for computer science you should be for emotionality

So computer science majors are at higher chance of unemployment? BAHAHAHAHA
Should of got into trades code monkeys
Ironically they think they're smarter than us but are not when it comes to job prospects.

I think for CS its now 6.7%

Computer engineers, OP's major and the one you said was good because "he knows how to build computers," has a higher unemployment rate than CS, the code monkey major.
I'm guessing you couldn't tell me how you'd feel if you had skipped breakfast this morning, huh?

I don't know you all's sources, but I recently saw 5 data analysts in person so far and they said it is good to get a degree to get a job. One in my area said he was building a pipeline with SQL. Literally you all claim AI is replacing us, but we instead have just found better tools for our job, so now the competitive streak is knowing how to use AI and computers.

>building a pipeline with SQL
That might be literally the most AI-doable task possible lmao. But I do agree some degrees are still worthwhile.

i experienced a very similar situation (stem major, got depressed and cut my friends off, struggled with the embarrassment of sudden disappearance, etc.) my advice is to just reenter and go through the motions as quickly as possible. today, if you can. your coursework is not unrecoverable. i had a few professors who saw that even though i went awol halfway through the semester i came back and made a clear, concerted effort to catch up on the material.
if you can, start by focusing on one class for a day. block your time for each missing assignment and manually check them off a list.
it's ok to get overwhelmed, and in a world in which you only really get one shot at undergrad it's better to be shameless and grab whatever points you can get than to keep the path you're going now.

Can you get on some anti anxiety meds? Tbh if you can't open your inbox even then you need meds or actual coping strategies from a professional. I get the anxiety around it. I graduated with a comp e degree and now I'm writing java as a day job, but the stuff that you have anxiety over today is just going to be the same stuff you experience in your career. You need to get in front of it.

Ye, markets not looking great. So goes the boom/bust cycle of the industry. In a couple of years they'll be saying the same shit about how you should get into coding and there will be a shortage of juniors and if I survive in industry for that long it will be a great payday.
