I am a millennial who went back to college after years away, and I was actually making some social headway with the younger students. I thought I was doing alright blending in. Then I committed what apparently counts as a mortal sin on campus. It started when someone brought up her new Labubu. I made the mistake of saying what I genuinely thought: that it is not a rabbit, it only wears a rabbit skin, and the reason it has a row of razor sharp teeth is because it is a predator. That you could not let your guard down around a thing like that. I said it in a lighthearted way, not as a lecture. Immediately the Zoomettes around me reacted like I had just kicked a puppy. They jumped in to insist that it is just "a nice monster that would never hurt anyone" and the temperature in the room plummeted. Within a day, I discovered they had quietly remade all the group chats and the Discord study group threads without me in them. No message, no confrontation, just silent exile for daring to speak ill of the demon apparently everyone has decided is sacred. They also used to not mind me checking them out and said I was older but I had "aura" and now they button up their shirts and pull their little shorts down to cover up their underbutt when I'm trying to get a little cheeky peek. I used to be able to make people laugh but now they won't give anything but one word answers. I am not trying to be edgy or ruin anyone's fun. I honestly did not know that critiquing a toy counted as a social landmine. I am just feeling like I tripped over an invisible generational taboo. How do I bounce back from this without groveling or pretending to become a Labubu devotee overnight? Do I just keep my thoughts to myself from now on, or is there a way to laugh this off and reset the vibe so I am not the campus pariah for hating this horrible gremlin?

the truth is that you're alright, the thing with school is that these people are all in their formative years and they make stupid mistakes, even into their early 20's a lot of them are still emotionally children. I know how you feel because I'm 29 almost 30 and I'm in a study with anywhere from late teens to early 20's students.

My best advice to you which is what I'm doing - is to find a life around other social groups with different people. That will give you different dynamics, it will diversify who you hang out with, and these people at school won't matter to you too much.

I have classified the vast majority of my classmates as - stupid fucking n's, children, stupid.
I don't notice them in class I don't care about them at all. I go to my events and I enjoy myself and have a good time, class time is for class not for fucking around. During class time I work or I talk a bit of shit but I don't take anything seriously.
If I do something 'out of line' or say something - It's always when I go to school clubs after school, or to school parties, and I owe no one nothing there. They can all suck my dick. So long as in class I'm normal they can't say shit to me.

Oh and I ignore stupid bitches who create toxic cliques. That's not my game to play. I bet my ass half those girls identify as neurodivergent and have colored hair and the other half identifies as queer. They can all kindly drown themselves lol

Junior year I ran out of money and dropped out to work but returned 3 years later to finish. In only 3 years it was a different world and I felt so out of place BUT worldly.
