I've always wanted to play a board game or play dungeons and dungeons with a group and befriend them through it, it's this one interest of mine that's followed me through my entire life.
I live in a boring country and I'm a practical NEET with no IRL friends and I don't have social media(and I have no interest in getting Discord either), I've never played a traditional game, but I really, really, wish I could.
If you guys have any pointers on what I could do, or where I could go, please let me know, I just want to play it one day with friends and hopefully in real life. I know of meetup.com but they're all sometimes paid events and my friend warned me about them and told me to avoid them at all costs. Thank you anons if anyone could help.

play online? d&d models cost a lot of money, don't start with that unless you already have someone to play with IRL.
I'm not a board game guy but I recently got into Hyperrogue, it's been really fun.

It's a rather simple turn-based dungeon crawler BUT it has a non-Euclidean board and is made by a math nerd, it's fun. for example it has one enemy that's infinitely big in practical terms.
I h8 Discord 2
maybe there's a game to your liking in the GameRanger catalogue, GR is an old (but still maintained) matchmaking + chat client for several hundreds of LAN-online games.

maybe Battle for Wesnoth is more your style. It's over 15 years old (but still maintained), should be very doable to find someone to play it with.
