Can reading many books mentally transform a person, or is that just a meme?

You are what you are. Books can add some information in your memory bank but I don't think they can your entire personality like a switch. I know some people take inspirations of certain characters and apply it to their own personality, but it’s nothing permanent.
If you're talking about getting rid of bad habits, then that requires a change in routine and consistency.

It's a meme.

Life is a race to get knowledge and wisdom. Everyone is born with a mostly-blank slate.

I can tell you that some books were transformative for me. Great books on spirituality, relationships, and health/medicine are all out there.

Yeah, reading Reverend Insanity made me a worse person.

Not for the sake of it. Only if you're curious about it.

Reading the right books can help you to become a more mature person.

absolutely yes. regularly reading 50k-100k narratives fundamentally changes your brain to be better than the people that can't

It's not a meme.
But you have to read books that are intellectually stimulating.

You remember how you go from cat in the hat to to kill a mockingbird to catcher in the rye and the odyssey in school?

You need to read stuff at an adult reading level as an adult. Someone spent years articulating their thoughts in a book. and you can read that information in a week. The more you read the faster you can read and comprehend. It really is a superpower because no one reads anymore and everyone is performative, especially if youre a man. If you a man who actually reads, you're ahead of evryone. also /lit/ actually is good and has basic guides on how to start getting back into reading.

depends what you read but generally no though not impossible. dont worry too much about when people say a book is "life changing" they are either dumb or lying.
maybe i am irritable and not giving them greater respect. go to /lit/ and ask for life changing book recs.

Yes it can. Though it has to be challenging material. If you get a book like 100 ways to think and you compare that to the books I read on deductive reasoning, conceptual thinking, and taoism, you'd be surprised at how stupid it is in comparison. I'm not judging your knowledge, which I'm 95% sure you're not dumb enough to buy every book from Amazon and not read though, though make sure it is challenging material. Read books from accounts from prison for example.
