For those who don't speak to their parents.
So my mom passed in 2019 and my dad lost his goddamn mind 3-4 months later. He started drinking heavily, became verbally abusive, self-destructive, got in trouble with the law, and more. I stopped talking to him at the end of 2020, when I realized no amount of kindness or understanding was going to help him out of that pit.

I just learned he had a heart attack. His new wife called my brother. I don't want to reach out, because honestly I still hate his guts.

Am I being too cold?

nah, if you don't want to contact him then why should you?
personally i prefer to listen to what my own emotions tell me to do rather than conform to nonsensical social norms.

It's irrelevant if you are being cold or not.
Once he dies, you won't have the chance to talk to him. If there's any doubt in your heart, you should go.

Heart attack ain’t even a big deal these days. Wait until he gets ass cancer or something.

If he dies, wanting to see you again but not being able, will you feel regret and sorrow?
Or will you be glad to stick it to him?

No you aren't OP. This guy is a dickhead. Instead of helping his own son, he freaks out like an emotional teenager. You owe him nothing. Now, just because something happened, there should be some form of almost automatic demand for care? It's a case of sorry because you got caught kind of thing. Just wait until that bastard gets back on his feet. Back to those same behaviors. Let the idiot die.
