I am a black American woman. My last name, when researched shows it is 80% black American. I have a Bachelors and 8 years of work experience in my field, including 1 successful prestigious internship, but have been unemployed since April 2025. I was a senior grossing $110k a year.
Someone I know is Jewish, His last name is clearly Jewish, and when researched is 100% Jewish. He has a high school diploma and 5 years of experience in his field. He is not a senior in his field. I do not know his income.
During dinner, he told us he was considering crossing into my field and taking a senior role (which he has 0 experience in). He said he already has 3 interviews lined up in my field. He was laughing while proudly describing the interview invites.
It sounds ridiculous but its true.
I hope this isn't horrible but I am considering changing my last name to a random Jewish one. I don't understand why they even considered his applications- he has no experience or a degree.
Lets not play pretend, we all know hiring managers do discriminate (the Tesla situation with documented emails as the most popular proof) but less so than they did before.
Has anyone else done this or is my unemployment anxiety getting the best of me? I don't mean to offend I am just becoming upset with myself and the opportunities to interview that he has landed but I have not.
