You'll note that the FPer listed out historical figures that are deeply split between being heavily involved in their societies and intentionally removing themselves from it.
I think that "SMART" is highly dependent on the current state of your society.
In early stages, even up until the late mid-stages, Intelligent people are still invested in their fellow man, and progression of that society. Later on, as the society becomes increasingly corrupt, decadent and stupid,(as most true hardships are reduced, leading to the weak and irrational having greater influence in said society,) Intelligent men tend towards self-seclusion and solitude.
It's cyclical, and only the top 20% of the population can even see past their immediate creature comforts to see that. Much fewer still, are those that actually act on it.
I'm always surprised when I hear these university trained monkeys regurgitate seemingly intelligent positions on things, then realize that they have almost NO COMPREHENSION of what they just said MEANS, let alone applying the frameworks to other subjects.
Wisdom is simply the application of knowledge tempered with experience; usually when NOT to do anything about something.
