My grandfather says he saw Orangutans when he was in the Vietnam war. Would be willing to share the story here if Pongo-bros want it or I could take it to /x/ (although outside of Pongo’s living where they shouldn’t there’s nothing really paranormals about his story).

you talking about the rock apes?
if anything, they'd be a relic population of Ponginae rather than Pongo proper
I wouldn't mind reading Grandad's memories tho

Maybe? He only ever called them Orangutans. Didn’t even know that Pongos didn’t live in Vietnam.

Alright, before we get to the Pongo’s I need to establish place and date. My grandfather drafted into the US Army in 1968, and was stationed there in country from 68’ to 70’. He was a Seargent in the 1st Infantry and a member of the 28th Infantry Regiment known as the β€˜Black Lions’. His unit was deployed to the Michelin Rubber Plantations in the DαΊ§u
Tiếng District of Bình DưƑn in order to rout a Vietcong presence in the area. The operation was a success, and his unit was then tasked with entering the Tay Ninh in order to conduct long distance, deep jungle patrols in a preemptive movement to prevent the Viet Cong from flooding the plantation again using the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Now the encounter itself would've occurred sometime in early 1969, between January to March, when his Platoon was conducting ambush and prisoner-taking operations near the Ho-Chi-Minh trail itself. They were on their way back after completing their mission, having ambushed multiple Vietnamese groups traveling down with ox-carts packed full of Chinese AK’s and explosives. They were exhausted and their Platoon leader decided that it was time to set up camp and so the different squads all fanned out to find a suitable clearing for the platoon to set up camp.
Anonymous No.4964972 >>4964973 >>4965000
>>4964971
Well him and his squad were by themselves, when they stumbled into a clearing void of any plant matter on the ground. Instead there was a large number of these beds that had been constructed with leaves, thatch, and mud, all clumped together a few feet away from one another. Immediately they suspected that it was Viet Cong activity, so they marked the area and reported by to the rendezvous. The Platoon moved in and it quickly became clear that it wasn't a VC camp. There were no boot prints or evidence of any tents having been set up, with not even the remains of a campfire.

They shrugged, and decided that it was either not a camp or one that was so old that it didn't matter. So they laid down their packs and began set up camp. Usually they had to worry about snakes when setting up camp, as doing so involved clearing and moving a lot of logs, rocks, and brush but as the area was completely picked clean it of everything really they just had to set up their tents.

They got about halfway through setting up their tents and starting some fires, when they began to come under attack from up in the canopy, with an assortment of small rocks, sticks, and feces being thrown at them from up above. Looking up, my Grandfather saw a large number of β€œOrangutans without the face flaps” staring down at them, sat on the canopy and hanging down from branches and vines. A few of them were round like a normal orangutan, but most of them were on the skinnier side, their fur ranging from ginger red to dark, almost black, brown.
Anonymous No.4964973 >>4965000
>>4964972
The platoon leader told them all to relax and that they were just orangatans and that they lived in Asia, so they simply shot a few rounds near them and they all took off screaming and howling through the canopy. They finished setting up camp, and they saw nothing more of the Orangtans until later that night, when they began hear screeches and howls all around them, just out of range of their crappy WW2-era flashlights. They ignored it, as creepy as it was, but then the platoon began to once more come under attack, as they again began to be pelted by anything the ”orangutans” could throw at them, with it progressing up until the point where the β€œorangutans” were hurling soccer ball sized rocks at them, with a few charging into sight just to scream and run back off into the darkness.

They first thought about just ending it and letting loose into the jungle with automatic and their grenade launchers, but they decided that would attract too much attention from any potential nearby Vietnamese elements. So they instead packed up and were out of there by first light. They continued to come under harassment from the β€œorangutans” until they were a good ten or so miles away, when the harassment stopped.

He hadn't actually about his encounter until one night last year when him and I were drinking and he was going over his experience in Vietnam. Apparently the whole thing came off as rather funny to him, but he had always just thought they were orangutans, not even aware that they don't live in Vietnam until I told him. Which he of course insisted they did, since you know, he saw them. I asked him how large they were, but said he didn't really know to certain since he never got a good look at them on the ground, but he estimated them to be around 4 to 5 in a half feet tall. β€œViet-Cong” sized was the words he used.
