Why would a walrus get embarrassed?
Do they have the cognitive ability to feel shame?

Of course, haven't you ever seen a shameful dog like after he went through the trash when you were gone? it's the same concept.

incorrect. dogs do not have the cognitive ability to connect something they did in the past with their owner's reaction in the present. if you caught them in the act, there's a good chance they'll understand they shouldn't be doing it but that's about it.

That's fear as the dog picks up on you being about to chimp out for, as it sees it, no reason.

>Ummmm ackshually [insert ridiculous reddit bullshit]
Even if you were to take your retarded mewlings at face value and dogs can only literally process the immediate instant of reality occurring like they're a fucking insect (false), they can still be conditioned to know that a given behaviour is wrong (plus you're bullshitting and they actually do in fact have memories longer than four seconds) and thus eating garbage and being caught absolutely could elicit a "shame" response.

The problem with this argument is you can not actually know what is in the dogs head. Shame is experienced entirely internally, and whether someone is just acutely aware of consequences or cringing in shame and not wanting to be seen is almost impossible to distinguish without being a mind reader, or working with someone who possesses the ability to output information using an abstract language that has different words for shame and fear of consequences.

Shame and fear of consequences being different concepts is not even universal to humanity.

i never hit my dog and they show shame

whats is shame but being afraid that others will have a low opinion of you? that is exactly what shame is. there is nothing super special and humans only no matter how hard ethologists jack their tiny dicks in their latest attempt to pretend they are intellectuals and real scientists. they have been wrong every damn time and are not going to start being right any time soon.
>latest ethologist L:
>ethologists: dogs dont know words its sound to action conditioning
>neurologists: uh oh looks like the common man was rignt and dogs do know words as general concepts
ethologists are still coping with dogs having the same neurological signs of love as humans ffs
>NOOOO IT CANT BE EMOTIONS… SHOW ME A POEM WRITTEN BY A DOG… ANIMALS DONT HAVE FEELINGS THEY DONT REEEEEEE -ethology

can you not fucking read? that's why i said there's a "good chance" that if you catch them in the act and you get upset, they'll make the connection that they shouldn't do that. but if you come home after an 8 hour day, see that they got into the garbage hours before, start chimping out and think the dog knows why you're upset because it's shaking in fear over said chimping out, you're an anthropomorphizing retard.

problem with this is that they are hiding (in shame) before you start chimping out
