Big Cat general
Post large felines
Anonymous No.4995199 [Report] >>5000306 >>5006688
Something I've been thinking about for a while: Anyone know what the common ancestor of big cats (pantherinæ) and small cats(felinæ) was like?
Was it a small cat or a big cat?

i was like 2 seconds away from typing "cougars literally evolved to be pets and cuddle in big beds with humans" but the logistics of feeding a fucking cougar snapped me out of that delusion

Its not a logistics issue, just a can you afford it or not issue. I'm broke as fuck so I definitely couldn't. I agree with your assessment though.

I kinda felt this when I finally got a cat.
I mean I'd had cats as a kid but it had been many years, I finally got a place that allowed animals and got another cat.
Now I'm a bit antisocial, I'm sure y'all can relate, but having a little cuddle tiger rub his face on me any time I was home was a revelation. I am severely touch-starved and this little goober saved me.

Flickr is the place to go for animal photos. Mandenno Photography and Tambako the Jaguar are two users with fantastic cat pics. Plenty of hobbyists who take great shots as well, and if they disallow photo downloading you can use inspect element to just grab the image url and download from that.

I think the fact that she keeps her jaguar obese but all the other cats are in relatively good shape implies that they might be the most aggressive pantherans out there
Anonymous No.5003286 [Report] >>5009910
>>5003268
I dunno, he's always been chunky, and seeing as she works at a rescue (as opposed to privately owning them) I'd imagine they do their best to keep them as happy and healthy as possible. Some rescues regularly keep animals at a slightly-overweight level and call it "sanctuary weight", so that if a cat gets sick and starts losing mass rapidly, their body has a buffer of extra energy to help fight off the illness. Plus Tank has always been calm and friendly on camera, don't think I've once seen him be aggressive. also jaguars are just fat fucks in the first place lmao

Even in a snowscape, there's still plenty of brown trees, tall (albeit dead) grasses, and rocky terrain to break up the background. It's definitely not as ridiculously effective as a snow leopard's coloration, for instance, but it seems to work fine for them as an all-season solution.

Nope. Have you never wondered why hunting gear is orange? It's because most prey animals can't see orange but to us, is the brightest fucking thing and "sticks out like a sore thumb" making it less likely we'll shoot a motherfucker. Anyway, to most prey, tigers actually look green and brown. Weird, I know, but it's true.

Pretty low if it a full grown Panthera genus cat decides to outright attack you, though they tend to avoid humans so you probably wouldn't even know there's a cat nearby. Same goes for cheetahs and cougars, which are the only other cats I'd consider a threat to a grown man's life. Maybe clouded leopards if they really get the drop on you, but they're smol and tend not to pick fights.
