I saw a video earlier today of an Indian giant squirrel on a leash. It was freaking the FUCK out and looked like it was going to hurt itself and the Indians were justb kinda talking like this obviously tried existence for the squirrel was perfectly normal to them. As soon as I saw the squirrel lose its shut like that, I closed the window. It was an 11 minute video and I could barely get 2 minutes in before feeling such intense empathy for the fluffy fuck that I had to stop the video before I have myself a panic attack.
So I know what you mean.
The cage thing is the main reason I won't get a ferret or birdn or small mammal. I feel like it'd be torturous to them. : (

The housecat

It has no survival instincts and can not establish a wild population anywhere with predators. The only reason domestic dogs haven't eaten the entire species is because humans think they're cute and raise cats and dogs together to maximize the cuteness. They outnumber every other feline on earth combined.
Anonymous No.5010828 >>5010834

They absolutely can establish themselves as pests just about anywhere, Australia has a major feral cat problem. Even the regions surrounding African villages have feral cat colonies right alongside native African wildlife; conservation groups worry about the African wildcat (the wild precursor to modern domestic cats, picrel is an African wildcat) because they can interbreed with feral domestics and pollute their gene pool. I love cats but for fucks sake, keep them indoors.

Aside from domestic cats/African wildcats (for obvious reasons), I'd say leopards. Not just present in Africa but India and Russia as well. Far greater range than all other Pantherans. Extremely adaptable and can easily avoid conflict with humans by hiding out in trees.

They may have had a more specialized niche back then, compared to the widespread generalist predators they are now. There's plenty of small cat biodiversity in South America and Africa, but each one is better enough than everyone else at something to allow them to survive.

If you could choose any wild feline to have "domestically" (lives in your home, litter trained, friendly + won't attack people you have over, etc), which would you choose? I'd pick a snow leopard. Perfect companion for walks during winter, fluffy and playful, plus a perfect deterrent against home intruders. I know they're timid, but even still, if you break into someone's house then see a fucking snow leopard, it's probably time to leave.

They look like goobers but have fun personalities. Clouded leopards, jaguars and pumas look cooler but idk anything about their personalities at all and the only "pet" caracal I've seen hates all life.
Still, I couldn't afford to feed a big cat. A bobcat or lynx would be fine for me.

Anonymous No.5020771 >>5021763

Nope; snow leopards, for example, are considerably smaller than some dogs. Cats like leopards look bigger than in most pictures because they're typically photographed from far away, necessitating a zoom lens which has the effect of making the subject look "wider". In person you realize that they're actually smaller than some really big dog breeds. Luna (the one with the Rottweiler friend) was also an orphan and had to be hand-raised by her owner, and she ended up being a little smaller than a typical leopard. Messi the puma is a similar story, he had some health issues at birth and that resulted in him being a lot smaller than most coogs.
