One of our cats hasn't turned up yesterday evening as she usually does. Last time it was around the house was at 4 in the afternoon and since then she's gone missing. Does anyone of you have experiences with this?

Countryside, the largest predators are foxes around here.

>Let pet outside
>oh shit it stopped coming back
Predators of cats:
Every bird of prey larger than a cat (owls seem to actually prefer them)
Domestic dogs
Humans who won't be having their patio furniture destroyed or their garden shit up any longer
Cars
Foxes
Raccoons

Basically, cats don't belong outside. You are an animal abuser.

Any pest control function they might have can only theoretically exist if they are kept entirely indoors, otherwise they prefer non-pest prey and the pests they do eat are parasitized or injured.

Update: Daughter found her in the corn field next to our house, almost by pure coincidence. Her tail is broken right after her hip and she has a very slight pneumothorax. We assume she was hit by a car somewhere else and either hid in the field or took so long to crawl there. Apparently, injured cats don't tend to return to their home and rather hide and die.
She's been in clinical care for two days now and we'll take her home today. Her tail is paralyzed from the hip, but she can keep it unless it turns necrotic.
From now her and her brother get their GPS trackers back. Thanks for reading my blog.

tl;dr: Found cat, injured by car, vet fixed her up but her tail remains paralyzed.

unfortunately some cats just insist on being outside cats
despite trying to initially raise him as an indoor boy, my mom's youngest cat got outside once and after that never gave up being an outdoor cat. keeping in a cat who would otherwise stand at the door meowing and scratching (and who'll take any chance he gets to bolt outside) is both cruel and more work than it's worth
luckily he's pretty smart and has survived about 5 years so far as an outdoor cat. helps that we live in a low-traffic area.
his senior (former) outdoor cat is pushing 20 now, too.

Dont bitch or throw a fit when chadyotes and siberian chadskies munch on them then. Theyโ€™re just living life to the fullest and naturally hunting their natural prey.

On the other hand properly cared for indoor cats are happier than outdoor cats. Outdoor cats alternate between extreme stress and valued moments of safety which can make them seem more content when they return. But they are just tired, and happy they arent one misstep away from dying slowly. Indoor cats maintain a more constant level of happiness and a higher quality of life.

You can use drugs for that. Forcing your pest on the community is criminal. Outdoor "pets" spread disease and kill beneficial wildlife. According to a california study, outdoor cats reduce concentrations of native field mice and increase pest mouse and rat populations.

Wow.. at least its happy being traumatized and scared of predators taking advantage of the injury without its caretakers or place of safety for days. Truly living life to the fullest.

Who gives a shit. All cats are the same and have no actual personality.

You wouldn't even tell the difference if some meow meow shitter that looks similar to yours came to your house. Cats are bland, stupid, souless, walking shitting void. That behaves like women, only come and pretend to be nice when they want something. No wonder femoid pet of choice is usually a cat.

What? You mean you don't forbid your kid from playing outside and keep him in his room 24/7? What a horrible parent you are, don't you know how many kids get killed by cars??? Adults too, by the way. People should be allowed to leave their house.

When my cat and I lived abroad, she would always go outside. Even when I had her as a baby, she would just be circling my apartment looking for any way out.

She's only gotten lost one time, for about a week. But she eventually came back, just a little skinnier.

My cat wanted to go outside and that was a problem

So I started giving it a little bit of baked weed in its wet food and it calmed right down. I tapered it off and the change was permanent. I now have an indoor only cat.

Won't touch that shit myself of course

The point is, if the cat goes missing, gets stolen, hurt, sick or killed outside, it's ultimately the owners the fault and they are the only ones responsible for any bitch tears they have over it.
I wouldn't even consider one a pet, it's more like a stray you feed occasionally.

Whenever I visit SEA, I only notice cats begging to come inside. That said there are stray dogs and even monkeys so I doubt they're living life to their "fullest".
