Birds are highly evolved reptiles. Their thought process is totally alien to us. The way their brain is wired is completely different.

It's not even 100% certain they experience "thinking things through" or a subjective sense of self, because these traits aren't required for high intelligence and even advanced things like asking questions. Pondering the mind of a bird is like pondering an intelligent alien species.

Until they tell you, you won't know for sure, and it's possible that even with intelligence to match ours, they wouldn't necessarily comprehend the utility of telling you or even be aware of their motivations (why would they have to?)

More than half the birds in pelecanimorphae (pelicans, shoebills, herons ect) either the babies kill each other or the parents kill them until there's usually 1. They take a lot of energy compared other birds.
