He suggested bringing your dog to a home depot (or someplace with slight human activity) and giving your dog the task to pay attention to you when you sort of tug on the leash. I was wondering how this would work going forward; would the dog be trained to look at you when around strangers? Would the dog eventually be desensitized to strangers and stop barking at them? I'm in a complicated situation with my cattle dog puppy.

My wife and I rent out a house from a good 'friend' of ours. On the same property there is also another rental unit at the front occupied by an early 20s cuntish woman who seems to dislike dogs and then my friend's unit next door to ours. Next door to this property there are two gay guys that live there. All the houses are fairly close together.

I wake up early at 6am because I start work early. This means that my puppy gets let outside around 6:10am to go and pee and have his breakfast.

Lately he's been going outside and there have been feral cats hanging out in the backyard in the morning and he goes mad and starts barking like a madman really early in the morning. It's obviously not a good thing and I get him to stop barking but by that point the damage is probably already done and all the neighbors have been woken up.

Aside from this he sometimes has phases where he just starts barking a lot because he wants us to play with him. This is usually around 4-5 in the afternoon. And occasionally he'll just have random barking spurts in the night at like 8-9pm but not every day, maybe once every few days. They usually don't last longer than 15 minutes and then he falls asleep.

Well both neighbors have complained about his barking. I think it's the barking that's early in the morning that's the issue.

So my landlord 'friend' sent my wife this big text lecture about how we need to control our dog and he's a cattle dog and needs to be run on a farm for a minimum of 7 miles a day and all this shit about dog training. He thinks he's a dog whisperer but the only dogs he's ever had have been a golden retriever when he was a child and his current mixed breed dog who is anything but well behaved but just doesn't have barking as one of his vices. He said to my wife that if we didn't sort it out we'd have to find a place better suited for our dog to live, basically threatening to evict us.
