Maybe not crazy news for this thread but I just pet a cat for the first time in my life. I've never been an animal guy but even then I guess none of my friends growing up had cats I could pet. I wasn't expecting to feel their spine as you pet one

What might cause a 4 year old cat owned since 8 weeks to be harassed by other (indoor) cats and kicked away from its food, etc.?

Also apparently I'm adopting this cat. It's my cousin's cat, taken well care of and all that. She recently took it to the vet to make sure it wasn't sick and she has no idea why her other cats are behaving the way that they are. Any general cat advice? It's an indoor cat and I haven't owned a cat since I was a kid. Hopefully she gets along well with my dog.

Oh, poor thing. ): Not unheard of though - could be something as dumb as one cat got spooked by something, redirected the fear/aggression response to that one cat. Could be other stressors or jealousy - hard to say without seeing how the entire household goes about their day and interact.
I hope you taking her helps though.

Cats don’t have any higher function. They don’t know the difference between what’s indoor and outdoor. They just look at resources like check marks in a blank checklist. If you have a food bowl and litterbox that’s enough for a cat.

projecting midwit. one of my cats is anxious of the outdoors and relaxes immediately as he goes inside. I tried making him enjoy the outdoors for a year now and while he's no longer terrified, he's still going to his safe spot all the time and doesn't move from there until i use food to make him climb down. he's always alert and tense.
>>5020319
they do actually. and their preference is based on the environment they grew up in, but even that can be changed with time. except it's a terrible idea to try to make an indoors cat become a perma outdoors cat since they might not be able to handle the outdoors and die

ever had a kitten before? he's my 2nd maine coon kitten, the other one is an adult now. play with kitten before you decide to go to sleep. do a lot of cable management, hide cables behind furniture and protect the ones you cannot hide with cable covers. as for other tips
>touch his paws a lot as a kitten and trim his claws even if it's just the very tips, it will be easier to trim his claws later on
>give kitten a bath every 2-3 months just to get the kitten used to it. you don't want to "need" to give a first time bath when he or she is 3 years old
>brush every week once, brush every other day when shedding (spring and autumn generally)
>switch the toys around every few days to prevent boredom
>give cardboard box to chew on especially between 3-6 months. cardboard box is one of the best toys in my experience
>use tofu litter, as it won't get stuck to his paws. tofu litter is the best litter on the planet, I cannot use anything else

solo kitten will go crazy during the morning and evening because that's just how kittens are, they'll want to play. will sleep a lot during the day. afaik with kittens they shouldn't be left alone for too long, maybe ideally like 3-4 hours at 3 months and then add 1 hour extra for every month that they grow. just give the kitten lots of toys if you'll leave it home alone, and play with it when you return and maybe a bit in the morning. when I had a solo kitten I played around 45 minutes with it every day til the age of 6-7 months when he calmed down a bit and I reduced play time to 15 minutes, but every cat is different. the new kitten is a bit crazier, but he has an adult cat now to wear him down. you can also give him some automated interactive toys, or toys like those tunnels/circuits with a ball in them for them to push around. that will also keep it busy for a lot in my experience

Hello! I have lived with cats my entire life, and I still haven't found a litter system that works for my lovely cat and me. My cat is an indoor cat, and she is a bit bigger. No matter what I do, she spreads litter everywhere, and her litter box smells. I scoop her litter at least once a day, and I completely change it once a week. I am moving in with my partner, and we are living in a tight space, so I'm trying to find something that 1) keeps the mess contained, 2) keeps the odor contained, and 3) is easy to maintain. Any and all suggestions are welcome! :)
Right now I am using the Arm & Hammer Large Sifting Litter Box alongside Purina Tidy Cat Lightweight litter. I also want to mention that I am chronically ill, and have a degenerative spine disorder. Bending over frequently and lifting heavy litter bags can be difficult for me.

You may think the best place from them to do their "business" is where you do your "business." That is dead wrong. Try a place like the laundry room

Hey everyone! Need some advice here. We have 2 cats, both male, both senior. Not sure of exact ages but they are around 12-13 years old. Chunk is our problem cat who is ruining our home. A couple months ago, he decided to stop using the litter box entirely. He poops on the floor, and pees on anything soft. We have taken him to the vet and have had blood and urinalysis run and nothing is out of the ordinary. We hit our first real dealbreaker when he peed on our couch and bed the same day. Since that day, when we are not home, he is separated in another room where everything has been removed. Quite literally every time we let him out, he pees on something. We have purchased a new couch that he has already peed on. We are at a loss and don’t know what to do.

We’re at a point where we cannot use the guest bedroom in our home, we can’t trust him to be out and play with his brother, he is uncomfortable, we are uncomfortable, and I just don’t know what other steps to take. We have discussed trying to move him outdoors but I feel so guilty doing that, and we have also discussed trying to rehome because he may have lost interest in sharing a space in his senior years but again, I feel so guilty doing that. Any advice is appreciated.

My cat who’s almost a year old now just almost always will not use the litter box unless ot has been basically fully emptied that very day or maybe the day before. In the past she’s used it on my clothes but luckily she’s gotten used to doing it on the carpet or inside this old box of junk I have to throw out now that are right next to the litter box. I haven’t thrown them out yet cause I’m afraid then she’d go back to doing it on mine or my girlfriends clothes.

Some other context that might help is she was the runt of the litter and was the last one and one that took longest to actually train to she the litter box. Not sure what to do here

our boy loves to slowly lift his butt as he's peeing, sending pee over the wall of all but the tallest litter boxes. we've got an enclosed litter box too, but have to tape over the two hand-holes as he has excellent marksmanship.

we recently got a litter box "cabinet," with a central entrance to two litter box compartments on either side. unfortunately the Rubbermaid tubs we found to fit in the cabinet compartments don't fit in there with the lids on. and he has already peed up over the wall of the tub and soaked the cabinet wall and even managed to get a decent amount out the vent holes in the back of the cabinet...

my next project is to build a cabinet of sorts, that will fit tall Rubbermaids *with their lids on.* but i'm curious if anyone else has contended with this issue and found a solution.

have two 6 month old kittens. They've never intentionally peed or pooped outside of the litter box that I know of. BUT one of them is SO messy with the litter. I scoop it twice daily and I have two boxes, so it is not a matter of cleanliness. She will do this even if I just replaced the litter or it's sone random time. She gets in there and is all chaotic - it's like she's playing - and she will kick litter everywhere. This weekend it looked like she kicked a piece of fresh poop out of the box and then stepped on it, smearing it on the floor. The poop had litter on it so I know it started in the box. Just now I scooped their boxes and she went in there to potty, and then I found a piece of fresh poo, no litter on it, a few feet from the box on the floor. It was a small piece and she was just in the box, so I think/hope it was unintentional - maybe she jumped out too early and it was stuck to her butt? She doesn't have really hard pellett poos or diarrhea so I dont suspect she's sick.

I don't know, but years ago I had a cat that would poop and pee in our bed when she got mad at us and I went a long time without pets for that reason, so I'm paranoid that this is the start of a very stinky habit. They were strays and I don't know when they were separated from mama, so what are the chances she will learn to be less chaotic and cleaner with the litter as she grows? I know litter mess goes with the territory but the popp situation just ain't it.

I need help trying to figure out how to better train my cat to be “less messy” in the litter box. We have two litter boxes inside two litter box furnitures, but this boy doesn’t know how to aim. He’s constantly peeing outside of the box, so much that we’re practically deep cleaning the enclosures every day from pee misses. What are some of the ways you all have boy proofed your litter boxes, or at least trained your cat to not miss?

I adopted my kitty about 8 months ago and when I got her, she was completely litter box trained. I brought her to my parents’ house for the summer from June-August, where they have 2 cats themselves. While she was there, she began peeing and pooping all around my parents’ house and not using the litter box as much. I thought it was the stress of the move/being with other cats, not liking the litter, etc.

But when I brought her back to my place after the summer, she was still pooping and peeing everywhere outside of the litter box. She poops on the couch and my bed regularly now, and rarely uses the litter box to poop. She usually uses the litter box to pee, but she has also been peeing on the couch and the rug next to the litter box. I did some research and saw that if cats pee next to their litter box it might be because it’s painful due to urine crystals or a UTI, but I’m so confused about why she’s insisting on consistently pooping on the couch and my bed. I have a vet appointment for this week, but I’m just wondering if anyone has any ideas or experiences with this.

My whole downstairs smells like litterbox no matter how often I change it. I even deep cleaned the closet their boxes are in. Smelled the next day. It's embarrassing and damn those automatic litter boxes are expensive. I'm about to cave, though. I had a cat genie and I needed a part for it that I could not find anywhere. I called their customer service and they told me that they don't sell the parts for it anymore. I'm scared to spend that money on an expensive box if they can just force you to have to buy a new one in a few year because they discontinued the parts when it needs repaired.

Hey everyone so we have a 6 month old Maine coon named Malley. He is awesome, total snug bug, but he is also a wild man and his poops are SO smelly they stink up the whole house and are particularly toxic for my husband who works in the same room as his liter box. Our current litter box is the scoop free with the crystal litter just because that was what we had, but I’d really love to get a new box for him that will work with his growing size and most importantly help control the odor. I like the smart boxes we don’t have to scoop and more aesthetically pleasing options because we don’t have a huge house with great storage, but im open to whatever. He’s gunna be probably at least 20 pounds so I need a good size box. I’ve looked at litter robots and litter box hiding furniture but it’s hard to imagine if it will work for his size. Would love to hear your set ups, litter choices, boxes, furniture. Also maybe what you feed and if you’ve noticed if it helps with smell? Anything you think could help!!!! Thank you!

My mom has an 18-year-old cat named Lucy who has always used the same hooded litter box. Recently, Lucy started missing the box and getting urine on the floor, she usually pees on the litter towards the front of the box. My mom made the mistake of buying a low-entry box without a hood, but Lucy wouldn’t use it. The next day, she got the old box from the garbage, cleaned it, and put it back in its original spot. Now Lucy won’t use the old one either! Any suggestions? Should she put both boxes there?

Me and my sisters recently went out of town and had our dad come to our house to watch our cats which they know him very well and they keep using everything but the litter boxes. We’ve never had this issue until we took this trip and they where left home alone for three days except for the two times a day our dad would come over and make sure they had food and water and let the dog out. We’re not sure why they’re doing this because we made sure all three litter boxes are clean.

We scrubbed everything when we got back home because there was feces and urine all over our couch, bathroom and kitchen (the only places they had access). We got home and got rid of the couch because it wasn’t worth deep cleaning and took one from our mom well it hasn’t stopped and we’re at our wits end. We woke up today to see They’ve used the restroom on the couch and even in the kitchen sink and we just don’t know what to do anymore. It’s not like they didn’t know our dad they’ve been around him plenty of times and one used to live with him we just don’t know how to get them to use the litter boxes again. We’ve even put them in them like you would a kitten and nothing has changed it doesn’t seem like they’re using them at all.

My cat Allie (4 years old, female, spayed) keeps pooping outside the litter box, either on the mat that is under it, or right in front of her box. This has been going on since end of September 2024 when I was living with two roommates and I have now moved in with my boyfriend (who she knows and now really loves, she didn’t like him the first year we were dating). The three of us have been in the apartment together for four months now, and this is still a weekly, if not daily issue. It usually happens while my BF and I are at work or out of the house, or overnight while we are asleep. BF works Thursday-Monday (has Tuesday/Wednesday off) and my schedule is usually Tuesday-Sunday.

I took her in for her yearly regular check up and rabies shot in October and the vet said it's a behavioral issue, not a health issue, and that I should only be seriously concerned for her health if she is peeing outside her box. I had taken her to another vet (like an urgent care vet) in early January due to her having some vomiting issues and the second vet said the same thing.

I did change her litter type (I had been using Arm & Hammer and am now using Tidy Cats, both clumping). We have her main box in our office/second bedroom and another in our bedroom next to her cat tower. I’ve tried having the boxes be covered and uncovered and it doesn’t seem to matter. I also added one of those Feliway plugins in the room where her main box is but I don’t really think it’s doing much. We have been scooping her litter box twice a day, and do a deep clean every couple of weeks (we just use dish soap and hot water). A friend recommended that when she does poop on the mat, to pick up the poop with paper towel and put it in the box, so we’ve been doing that with a little bit of success. We also wondered if she is just bored while we are gone, so we have been playing 24/7 feeds of birds/squirrels when we leave the house.

ymmv with food and wood based litters. Caused grain beetles for me so I use clay instead.

My gf has this fucking long haired cat that's a pain to take care of. It needs brushing daily, won't piss or shit in the litterbox, is fussy with food, etc etc

Last week this cat got a large knot of hair on the back of its head. Like a nasty dreadlock chicken nugget

I kept telling gf to take care of her cat and remove the knot. After a week of this she told me she cut off the knot, but when I saw the cat last night it was clear she fucking cut off the skin at the base of the knot. the cat has a big open wound!

I said wtf why didn't you take the cat to the vet, she said she'd do it tomorrow. Now it's tomorrow and she said the vet doesn't have any availability today

WTF am I supposed to do about this cat

Jews are pushing an intense anti-cat propaganda op right now. They're literally afraid of how popular cats are especially on the internet and that they're creating such a psychosocial phenomenon it might lead to actual cat worship and the resurrection of a Bastet cult. This exact comment almost word for word has been posted for years. It's meant to try to get you to kill your cat by letting it go outside and getting run over by a car or killed by another animal.

here's a few more
>if he starts moewing during the night or becomes active, do not give in to the demands. do not play, do not give attention
>get a fishing pole toy for when you want to play with them, they go absolutely insane over those
>give best treats for when he does the things you want him to do (like sitting in your lap)
>get one of those claw trimmers that have a led light incorporated, i will help you see the quick. you don't want to accidentally hit the quick, he might never want to have his claws trimmed ever again if that happens
