you can see how easy it would've been to domesticate canines. they turned wild foxes into pets in just a few generations on fur farms and the same works with coyotes, wolves(to a lesser extent).
You could easily breed the first "dog" from wild stock in the course of a nice long lifetime, and if your kids and grandkids kept it going, then you'd have a few new breeds with just a few generations.
Canids have special features in their DNA called "tandem repeats" that allow them to phenotypically mutate/adapt very quickly, unlike most other critters, like cats and cows, which are all just slight variations on the same basic design.
