Bros, I'm lost. My aunt died and she had a parrot, nobody was willing to take it, so I did. Now it's literally ruining my life. It's literally screaming all day, sunrise to sunset. When I try to get close it tries to bite me.

I think it's like 30-40 years or so old, my aunt had it since she was a kid (I think). I have no idea what to do, animal shelters near me aren't taking in birds, and have no hopes of giving it to someone else and every day with it burns fractions of my sanity. It's screaming right now as I type this.

ChatGPT says I should just put it down, but I also can't stomach that. What the fuck should I do?

Give it to a zoo or bird sanctuary

No bird sanctuaries near me and only one big, fancy zoo which I doubt would take him in. But I'll still give them a call.

Chat GPT recommending you kill the animal is pretty funny, thought they would have safeguards against that

Put it in a box and place it on their doorstep.

Your bird is mourning/missing your aunt and unsettled due to being rehomed. Was he allowed to see her when she was dead?

Hopefully he was, because that makes things easier, and faster, but it’s still going to take him a year+ even if he has good care and adequate companionship. Do you work from home? If the answer is no, you need a second bird for his health. If the answer is yes, you need a second bird for your mental health. If he was your aunt’s only bird and she wasn’t a stay-at-home, he’s probably incurable insane already. If you think you can tough out his morning period and he’s just sad/lonely/frightened due to the aunt shaped hole in his world plus the move to your home from his, you should go visit a bird rescue with him and see if there’s another parrot he has a good neutral interaction with that could be your second bird.

My aunt died in her house, so he saw it. He did have a bird gf, but she died a few years ago.

I understand the trauma, and I feel for the bird. But it's seriously rough, like I said the bird is basically in meltdown mode all day. I actually already tried to dissolve some diazepam in water but he barely touches it.

I get that getting and 2nd bird would be good, but right now I'm not sure if that is something I can or want to handle long term. Situation just suck hard right now. I'll expand my search for bird sanctuaries.

all pet health advice on the internet comes packaged with "see a vet" and "euthanise if its suffering", so ai will mimic that often in the context of pet care. also asking an ai for pet care advice should mark ones entire bloodline for extermination.

You could try normiebook. There are a lot of bird rescue groups out there. As a parrot owner I wish you the best. I appreciate that you are trying to give the bird the care he needs.

I'm afraid I don't know much about birds, but that one looks cool as fuck. He looks mental, but cool as fuck. Do you not have a bigger pic? When I clicked on your OP, I called you a faggot in my head, for posting a pic that is only 10% bigger than the thumbnail.

It looks like an African grey parrot. It's supposedly one of the smartest bird species in the world.

Post the story to reddit, unironically. I think there's a decent chance that somebody will reach out to you. Also cover his cage with a towel it will give you both some rest.

OP here.

Great news, after spending literally 5+ hours of calling people I actually found someone. It's not a bird sanctuary, but a private guy who already has 6 parrots and like 50 years experience of taken care of them. He sounded like a great guy, and I'll drive there on the weekend, to check out everything before I give him the bird. I have a good feeling about this.
