Primates
Why do we have to be the hairless ones? Was that God's way of incentivizing us to wear clothes?

Some early hominids like Neanderthals evolved in a semi-aquatic environment where they post much of their hair so humans retained that trait when we interbred with then.

This also why many early hominid bones show traits like pachyosteosclerosis and why even modern humans retain features like a vernix caseosa which are generally only found among marine or semi-aquatic mammals (but not among chimps or other extant apes).

>post much of their hair

That should say "lost much of their hair"

That would definitely play a part but I can see a far greater early contributor.
Humans are excellent long-distance walkers and runners and that skill was developed in Africa.
So in order to efficiently lose heat and sweat effectively you need to lose all the hair.
