If they do end up finding life/fossils on Mars (or Mercury or Europa), would that impact you personally at all? Would your beliefs or politics change? Would you live your life differently with the confirmation there's alien critters?

For me personally it opens up interesting questions on the origin of life. Did it happen independently or did microbes migrate from one planet to another. Or did it come from anywhere else?
It also increases the likelihood of life being found elsewhere.
I'm not much of a religious or political person.

I always thought it was interesting that microbial life appeared on earth the instant its surface had cooled down enough for the chemistry to be possible (~200-500 million years after formation), but the cambrian explosion of complex multicellular life didn't happen until over 3 billion years of just microbes and gross mats of shit.
If microbes evolved independently on Mars, I think that proves that life slop should be basically everywhere, but proper aliens would still be super unlikely and require conditions to be stable for a very long time.

So basically every livable exoplanet will still be boring rocks as expected, but also you have to worry about alien diseases.

This is on my personal bucket list of, "things I want to know before I die."
If the Mars fossil does turn out to be a kind of Stromatolite: did life on Mars independently evolve or does all life in our solar system share a common ancestor? Would we then have to leave our solar system before we found actual-actual aliens or what if those are distantly related to us too?

If the Mars life shares a common ancestor with Earth Life, I wouldn't really care.
If it arose independently, I'd be worried that means there's some sort of great filter in humanity's future since life would be common enough to arise twice in the solar system and yet we see no sign of other civilizations.
In either scenario, I'd also be a bit peeved that we wouldn't really be able to send astronauts to Mars without having to worry about destroying the Martian Biosphere.

If earth was always unstable there would never have been life.
Earth has had huge periods of stability or very gradual change interspersed with sudden extinctions from short catastrophic events.
So contrary to popular opinion, the Earth has never been "perfect" for life, but rather had the bare-minimum required stability and precursor chemicals.
Which is still extremely rare.
I would definitely argue against the instabilities selecting for multicellular life.
Every time there has been a mass extinction it is always more detrimental to larger complex animals than simpler smaller ones.

It depends on the kind of life discovered, especially with respect to its degree of development and the quality of the evidence. How I imagine what's going on out there wouldn't change much if, say, something like the Europa Clipper, delivered unambiguous evidence of at least prokaryotic-level microbial life there. It would be quite another matter if something advanced and improbable as even a crayfish were discovered there, way under its icy surface, however that was done. The universe would seem to me more fun, since I abhor desolate sites and situations.

They already did, but NASA was so shocked at the results of microbial analysis that they wrote it off as a likely error with the probe, despite the probe team arguing the results was a very strong indicator for life. But NASA still wrote it off as a false positive up until recently and are now reconsidering their findings. To make that perfectly clear: they tested for microbial life, found it, and proceedes to throw the findings into the trash because they found the things they were looking for.

Currently the argument is that the results are indicative of microbial life but the external conditions of Mars by conventional understanding makes carbon based life not possible, or at least as far as we under about that the enviromental conditions of the planet.
