Is horse racing evil? Do they abuse the horses?
Anonymous No.5053189
>>5053185
Not inherently but there are a lot of owners who use abusive practices. Racing is hard on horses, and some owners will throw away horses that can no longer race. Sometimes they will use "broodmares" where they pump out foal after foal from a horse, destroying her body, and take away these foals way too early which is traumatic. Broodmares are also often thrown away as soon as they can no longer conceive. There's no shortage of nasty practices like these.
Anonymous No.5053190

Fun fact: geldings actually need to have their sheaths washed much more frequently than stallions because stallions keep their private parts clean by, well, using them. I don't remember the exact details but the basic gist of it is, by letting it hang there is less opportunity for dirt etc to gather in the sheathe (skin gets stretched out = no wrinkles = no place for gross stuff to grow), plus some of it is rubbed off during mating.

this isn't necessarily a good thing. much like an engine, a horse likely has a particular velocity at which it develops maximum power. it's about impedance you see

Anonymous No.5059322 >>5059398

While it's possible to wrap a rope around the dyno, that probably requires anchoring it and modifying the drum, which would be very expensive. It isn't their dyno. Trailer mounted dynos are easily $60-100k+, and it's only one video.

The dyno is probably also calibrated for specific use with tires riding on top. It's much cheaper to pull the engine from a car and build the mechanism into that. Plus with the known variables of the gear system, the engineers were able to compensate for mechanical losses.

I'm sure the gear system also let them tune it a little bit for the horses ideal speed.

It hasn't even been a hundred years ago since pretty much every household NEEDED a horse in order to survive. Horses have played an integral part in human societies for literally thousands of years. They ploughed fields for peasants, carried soldiers to war and were status symbols for royalty. They have evolved alongside us like dogs and cats and cattle. Is it REALLY that strange that some people in modern times would be fond of horses? Hell in some parts of the world, work horses are making a comeback as alternatives to modern machinery (they don't do as much damage to the ground as heavy vehicles) as well as a growing interest in homesteading. Plus many horse breeds are classified as cultural heritage and have cool and interesting histories to them, which makes them really neat from an anthropological standpoint.

They are a nice in-between of dogs that have been bred to shit and can't function without you, and cats that can be independent to the point of just tolerating you as a food dispenser and a petting machine. Does perfectly fine on the field, could kick the shit out of you, but you have treats and scritches for starters and just nice company, so you are a friend and indirect part of the herd. It just feels deeper, with more substantial agency of their own, than dogish attachment love to me.

you're better off burning the hay in a power plant. animals are terribly inefficient. where the horse shines today is that it's somewhat intelligent and doesn't damage the ground, as >>5059503 says. for example, a horse is very useful for selective logging. think about what you'd need to do to get the same kind of traction in as slim of a package, without tearing up the ground. you need tracks at the very least. but tracks can still slip in a way hooves won't. you need to be able to swerve between trees, which the horse does naturally and also their bodies are bendy. plus you can pet the horse and it'll be happy
downside is horses are a lot of work to keep and you get sad when they die

Correct, horses can navigate terrain that's too steep or narrow for machinery. Apparently some areas are also starting to use work horses because of reduced noise, in fact I live close to a city that instead of using a lawnmower hire a horse-drawn haymaker to cut grass in the local park for pretty much that exact reason. And also because horses are, well, cute.
Found a video of both big horses and little shetlands doing some logging, it's pretty interesting.
