>bats comprise about 20% of all classified mammal species worldwide, with over 1,400 species
they seem to be very succesfull as far as mammals go even if you barely see any of them. but here in my area at dawn you can sometimes spot a few fluttering around

flight is one of the most broken abillities, and these lil guys represent us as mammals against all of the other unholy creatures that are able to fly

Yeah, the bats that have the heads of rats/mice/ferrets/foxes are great. I just hate the hyper-evolved bats with heads out of horror movies.
It's interesting how most animals that evolve in darkness for too long eventually evolve into ugly abominations.
>>5061072
Bats are more aerodynamically efficient than birds but also less metabolically efficient than birds.
Bats are also more maneuverable in flight than birds.
I would also say that bats on average are more intelligent than birds.

https://www.livescience.com/1245-bats-efficient-flyers-birds.html

This is pretty impressive because bats only evolved what? around 50 million years ago and primitive birds were around 150 million years ago.

That is so fucked up. I'm sorry, but I can't support something as profoundly ugly as the Greater noctule bat eating a robin. That just makes me upset. It's the same kind of revulsion I got from reading an old ship sighting of a giant squid drowning and slowly eating a baby whale calf. Or knowing that there's a giant worm that parasitizes the fetuses of Sperm whales. Or that video footage I saw of a tiny blind baby rat being surrounded by huge lice and ticks that were covering it to the point you couldn't even see it. Just pure evil shit. Pure evil.

I mean, as far as bats go that isn't a particularly bad looking bat. And I am impressed at its hunting. But I would feel way better about something like a carnivorous flying fox eating birds. It's just my personal bias. I mean the circle of life is also a 50 year old pedophile SA'ing a baby to death. I don't like it when something I perceive as lessor or unworthy is predating or parasitizing something better than itself.

They are awesome creatures, fellow mammals that fly and echolocate. I'm terrified of rabies though so I like to avoid them as much as possible.

where do i go to read and learn more about bats in general? any good text books? do you also follow white papers as well to learn more about them? or just good books that tell more about the different type of bats and their ecological impact and function.

But less aerodynamically efficient than dragonflies, which can hover and fly backwards and sideways because of their two pairs of wings.

Pretty much. Even at 62 my hearing is weirdly good to around 17kkz in the left ear, 16khz in the right, pretty much as it was when I was 35. Little brown bats were a thing where I lived at the time, and if one had pretty good eyes and ears one could clearly hear the soft rapidly intermittent "tsst" of them, even as they were echolocating at far higher frequencies. One got into a neighbor's apartment, and in the process of capturing it, I had an unusually close look at it, both in terms of sight and sound. Very alien and very cute.

>>5062508
Just doing a quick search it's surprising that dragonflies fly just as fast or faster than bats. Wouldn't have expected that. I guess you see dragonflies just hovering most of the time.
>>5062524
That's pretty good hearing for your age. I'm half your age and my hearing isn't that good due to a lingering ear infection I had as a kid.

I a rat had the personality of Michael Jackson it would eventually turn itself into a bat.

I used to live a few minutes drive from a nature preserve where in August one could hear little brown mantises singing very loudly at 16kz in hundreds of thousands, One of my favorite memories is locating one of them--not an easy feat--in a little shrub--in Oak Ridge Prairie Park.

they lived in my attic for years. then one day see one 2 floors down in the kitchen. grab my pond net take it outside. call animal control cause it was acting wierd. animal control sends it for rabbies testing. tell me it will take a couple weeks. calls back 3 days later and tells me it was positive we should talk to the Dr. at the hospital. hospital doctors say basically if you didn't see it fly in then you should get vaxed because sometimes they bite people in their fucking sleep they get rabbies and die without ever knowing they were bitten. they said they give rabbies shots ever fucking day without a confirmation. my son, my mom, my dad and me all had to get vaccinated. and if your fat you get bonus shots.

>>5060738 (OP)
I think nocturnal ones are ugly, hideous, neat creatures. I came home from the club one night, in the snow, and found a bat shivering on my doorstep. I brought it in, put it into a shoebox with some socks to warm it and drove it to the nearby bat sanctuary the next morning.
They told me the hideous thing had… I forget… white nose disease? Something like that. Whatever it was called, they explained that it was a fungal infection that can lead to colony collapse so they had to destroy it, unfortunately.
I'm sorry batbro (or batbrodette). I didn't mean to get you killed. : (
Anonymous No.5067867 [Report]

White nose disease makes a bat itchy,so it can’t properly hybernate/sleep,so instead it just stays up all night shivering and losing energy.

man I just hate it when the nearest bat sanctuary is closed and you have to drive a few extra miles to get to the second closest one
