This only really applies for mammals and maybe birds.
Zoos can be perfectly ethical for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Several amphibian species would be entirely extinct if not for zoos, even.

I think people who say Zoos are inherently ethical are idiots. I've lived in America and Japan and I'll say that, sadly, even Western roadside zoos tend to have much nicer exhibits than you'll find at major zoos and aquariums here in Japan. However, zoos are not only ethical, they are moral. It is man's God-given duty to manage nature, and zoos allow us to conserve animals and share them with the world.
