Food, water etc are PvE => favors cooperation.
Sex is PvP => favors competition.
This is because you don't need more food, water etc than everyone else, you just need enough. Once everyone has enough there is no logical reason to keep accumulating endlessly. Sex is different because attractiveness is relative. In order to be attractive you must be more attractive than everyone else you are being compared to. This means there is no point at which everyone has enough. You can only be attractive enough if other people aren't. You need to be more attractive than me, and I need to be more attractive than you. This isn't possible without contradiction. Consequently the competition to be the most attractive never fizzles out in the same way competition for food, water etc does when these things become abundant. Attractiveness can never be abundant because its all relative. When the competition to be the most attractive spills over into the economy you get a never ending rat-race where people accumulate things they don't actually need in an absolute sense just to make themselves more attractive than other people in a relative sense. This is where capitalism ultimately comes from, and it's why leftists (who typically worship sexual competition) are always ineffectual at creating alternatives to capitalism.
Not that the relative nature of attractiveness also means that you benefit from other peoples' misfortune in a way that isn't the cause for other needs. If you are starving and all my food spoils, you don't magically become better off just because I am now worse off. All needs work like this except sex because attractiveness is relative. If I become homeless and diseased then you benefit because you now appear more attractive compared to me. Consequently it is the endless struggle to be the most attractive that causes people to not care about other peoples' misfortune.
