>>935962005>>935962051I'm going to explain this in good faith.
Science is a method to deduce truth. The belief comes where people then think that they can deduce all truth via a material method (science). These people believe only the things we can measure exist. They believe that only "experts" can do science. They believe if something is "peer reviewed" that that means it is an unassailably "true".
Functionally none of these people do science or perceive the world scientifically.
They really do operate at a "belief" level of understanding about truth. ("Trust the experts." "Trust the science of you're a conspiracy theorist/racist/bigot/homophobe" "I'm not going to analyze that study because it doesn't agree with my soy redditor communist preconceived narrative!")
The irony is this is the definition of the word "bigotry".
You can't derive an ought from an is.
And most humans are too stupid, literally not capable, to not think in narratives. The Truth is Christianity, but modern society has replaced priests robes for lab coats.
To further articulate this idea, Vox Day has come up with terms to describe what is going on.
scientage - knowledge base
scientody - method
scientry - profession
