George "Geo" Herriman was a mixed race cartoonist born in New Orleans in the late 19th century. He both created a comic called Krazy Kat and pioneered the Sunday comics. His comic Krazy Kat is one of the most influential comics ever created, influencing cartoonists, writers, and many of the AbEx painters. It's the first comic ever written that was considered to have risen past what was considered a low class base form kf entertainment into the realms of high art. He experimented with panel layouts, incorporated surrealist ideas into the comics, and in Krazy has what could be considered the first non-binary character to appear in comics (Krazy's gender shifts back and forth, being referred to as both a male and a female).
