Roughing it outside? Libaries help a lot, McDonald's too. Places to charge your stuff and has wifi, toilets to shit in. Look for any 24/7 unmanned places for sleep, you could get lucky and have a laundromat that's still like that but post covid most aren't 24/7 anymore. A guy who worked for me last year started off homeless when he got the job; of course he had an extended cab truck that he slept in. He busted his ass at the job, kept cheap groceries (bologna sandwiches, peanut butter, protein powder) in the office fridge, and showered at a $10/mo gym. Of course the nights were no joke because you can't keep the truck running all night for the heat/AC, so it was stupid cold in the winter and balls hot in the summer. He saved up a ton and eventually found some supervised place like a drug rehab type home for just undee $500/mo. (He's clean though, no alcohol and nothing harder than cigarettes.) The company was super proud of him and the district managers bought him an instant pot for his housewarming so he could cook again.

tl;dr a car, staying clean, busting your ass at work, supportive job.

Being homeless can be the shit. Was on the streets for several years in my 20's.

Step 1: Go somewhere with moderate weather. Stay away from northern states and the desert. Too cold and too hot. Think Huntington Beach, Laguna, Newport on the west coast. Mild winters, perfect summers.

2. Stay away from southern states like Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia.

3. Find a sleeping spot away from people and traffic. Well hidden and easy to get to and out of with no one seeing. Someplace no one, gardeners, utility workers, etc are going to stumble on you.

4. Keep your spot secret. Tell no one. Repeat, tell NO ONE. Not even your bestest buddie. You don't want to wake up in the middle of the night with some randos dick up your ass. Yes, it happens. Or a knife in your neck. Again, tell no one. If someone finds your spot, don't argue. Get the fuck out and find another spot.

5. Don't take someone else's spot. Again, think knife in your neck.

6. Wonder everywhere around town, not so far that you have to take a bus. Find the golden spots. Restaurants that give away food, ash trays outside businesses for snipes, tourist hangouts, aluminum recycling bins. Some restaurants will bag up extra food and hide it at the same time every day for homeless. Stay away from ash trays and snipes by hospitals. People be sick yo. Only smoke fresh snipes. Don't be grabbing a fucking crusty ass snipe out of the gutter. You'll end up with a lung infection and probably die.

6. Make friends. Adopt your own unique whistle so you can find your friends when their out of sight. Numbers equals safety.

Go to bed whenever. Get up. Use the beach restroom to shit and shower. Collect some cans and get some cash. Buy beer and smokes. Go find your friends. Hang at the boardwalk spanging tourists. Buy lunch or hit the soul kitchen. Buy more beer. Hang at the park. Go yell at cars on the freeway. Go to bed. Repeat.
