Yes, the word “holocaust” originally comes from Greek and Biblical contexts meaning “burnt offering.” BUT in MODERN history, The Holocaust specifically refers to the Nazi genocide of Jews and others during WWII. Language evolves and this is its established meaning worldwide.
The Nazi camps were not “cushy”. Survivors’ testimony, Nazi records, and photographs show horrific conditions: mass shootings, gas chambers, medical experiments, forced labor, deliberate starvation, and executions. Millions of people, not only Jews, but also Roma, Slavs, disabled people, and political dissidents were murdered.
While Allied bombing did affect supply lines near the end of the war, starvation and mass killings in the camps were not accidental. They were part of deliberate policies. Camps like Treblinka weren’t “labor” camps at all, they were extermination centers designed solely for mass killings.
As for photographs, Historians are careful about sourcing. But the Holocaust is supported by an enormous body of primary evidence, including Nazi documents, eyewitness accounts, and physical remains of camps.
The Holodomor (the famine in Soviet Ukraine) was also a real atrocity. Recognizing that tragedy doesn’t negate the Holocaust, and vice versa, both happened and both caused massive human suffering.
