the Egyptians, the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Neo-Babylonians, the destruction of the first Jerusalem temple, the Persians, the Macedonians, the Romans, (destruction of their second temple, in 70 C.E., which Cyrus of Persia (called a messiah in the Hebrew scriptures!) had let them rebuild), centuries of being fought over by Byzantium and Persia, then the Arabs, then the Crusades, then the Turks, which takes us up to the end of WWI
i don't know if this theory is accurate, but i 've always figured Jews count Jewishness through the mother because when every swinging dick in the ancient near east has been raping the shit out of your women for millennia, who knows who the father is?
anyway, much of the Hebrew bible is a long string of copes for why the Israelites were constantly getting BTFO by everybody in spite of being YHWH's chosen people
