The gods or something like them are hiding somewhere and really either just gave up on people in general, or work in secret, likely both. The last envoy to act and work power openly (Jesus) basically upended society. There are different organizations of divine entities inhabiting different realms, and other modern religions would teach this but they've really just simplified and streamlined a complex world into "say this magic chant now you've ascended."
Every few thousand years something happens, which seems a little too rare to me. A lot of big religions started similarly where someone witnesses something out of the ordinary the accounts are repeated by word of mouth and slowly distorted. The Bible was written down (much of the Old Testament is admittedly compiled from memory after the destruction of temples) and preserved for the longest stretch of time in the West so they've basically won being the default. That doesn't erase pre-Christian depictions of angels, it just makes the lot more suspicious. Someone is hiding something but Pastor Jesus won't admit that or even suggest a point of where to begin.
