That rope wouldn't have been able to help. They cut the wedge for the chair hinge out way way too shallow for a tree that big, needed to go a little bit further, maybe JUST past the half way point.
The back cut was also HORRIBLY wrong, it's probably the biggest reason this tree went the wrong direction; he cut it at a slight angle! The back cut is what the tree is sitting flat on top of while it's falling, if that surface isn't mostly flat, that tree slides off of it, tearing the hinge wood, and goes backwards, just like in the video.
Probably would've helped to top that tree on the side that had the house, and pull the top with a rope in the right direction. That would've given the tree less drag in the wind, so any back wind would've been negligible.
