That's funny because I've been rewatching it season 1-3 despite the fact I used to avoid them on rewatch (I used to stick to season 5-11) recently and I really like them. The kids feel more like kids and not mouthpieces, and I like the core 4 dynamic a lot more with cartman and stan/kyle hurling insults at each other.

You probably don't need to hear it from me but almost every work is derivative in some way. Hell, some of the most beloved stories in the past decade have been, on the surface, amalgamations of random shit the creator liked.

The fact becomes even more obvious when you go and check out the stuff that inspired your favorite artists. The rabbit hole can be pretty deep but I've found that it eases my imposter syndrome quite a lot.

The fun part is that most people won't realize/give a shit if you're ripping things from other stories. Some of my most well received (and proudest) work is glorified fanfiction that nobody knew enough to call me out on.

See there's a natural through line here, everything stacks well and makes sense. But the next part, the punchline (which is what this entire segment was building up to) is where they fuck up, because there's no payoff.

Early South Park is littered with little mistakes like this. Not enough for the casual viewer to particularly care, but if you're looking at this from an artists' perspective (like Trey & Matt are) those little fuck ups add up.
