In developed countries the company reimburses you, yes. They also take note on whose shift the package went missing. If this happens again, they'll make a police report, suspend the courier and often launch their own investigation. Since couriers know they'll lose wages and get caught if they steal, they wont steal. This is how things should work: customer gets reimbursed, company loses the cost of 1-2 packages (lmao peanuts) but gets rid of the unreliable workers, and the unreliable worker gets fired. The wrong way to do it is to keep thieving couriers employed while giving the customers a middle finger.

The option I usually choose and which most courriers offer is to have it delivered to a designated local store, usually a supermarket or convenience chain, or a post office. Not as convenient in the US I'd imagine with how zoning works but here in the UK the vast majority of people will have one of these stores within 5-10 minutes walk maximum.
