This is wrong, the itemization in d2 is not robust enough to be ruined by runewords. Even without runewords there is never any reason to pick up even a single item. All of your upgrades will be from the trader and gamble. The probability of picking a genuine upgrade off the floor is so low that it's a waste of time to even look at items instead of just picking up what ever has high sale value, at which point even that becomes pointless as you'll get so much gold passively you'll constantly max it anyways.
All runewords did was add actual economy and longevity to multiplayer, as end game players repeatedly consume runes to roll for perfect stats on gear, and all runes can be upgraded to higher tiers, making them the perfect currency. I am highly suspicious of anyone crying about runewords, it's always a complete nitwit pretending single player d2 has something of value.
