It's complicated, but basically always be prepared for the worst case scenario for your options.

Hedging, like your put example, was the original purpose of options, letting people lock in their money before they could sell the underlying asset. When doing that you still have to do the math to see what you're spending on premium and how much you'll save if the stock goes down various amounts, and when selling options, what'll happen if you get assigned after an extreme move. Use a spreadsheet to make sure your numbers work, make sure all your options trades are limit orders with carefully chosen limits (as market makers will scam you if your limits are slutty), and structure trades so you wouldn't be financially ruined if you were hit by a truck while the options were left unsupervised. There was a girl who actually was in an accident with major traumatic brain injury and her portfolio lost 40% while she was in the hospital. 4 years later she made it back by buying ASTS.
