PROTIP you can kill insects by spraying them with a solution of dish soap and water. It works on any bug, even spiders, but soapy water will kill ants very quickly when you hit them with it.

Unfortunately it does not work as a deterrent. They can still walk over it. You can effectively deter ants with a mixture of salt and borax. Dust it around wherever they're getting in, and they will fuck off.

Ants have a weak point: When the queen dies, the colony dies. Worker or soldier drones cannot transform into queens. Queens only grow from fertilized eggs, which require mating drones. Mating drones are only produced on special occasions, normally there are none.

Slow-acting insecticides like sodium borate are the best approach. It takes 48-72 hours before it kills. Poison a sugar cube with such an insecticide. I had a hardcore infestation of white-footed ants a few years ago, it was fucking hell. They got into my house because a tiny little branch from the tree next to my house was touching the roof. Yeah Florida just doesn't really have good ground water for drinking. It's perfectly safe to drink but it will have an off taste unless you're running it through a filter first. I get 5 gallon jugs of water from walmart for .30 cents a gallon. it's reverse osmosis filtered gets rid of the fluoride and all the hormones and other shit, it's UV light treated and then it adds a bit of minerals back to give it a good flavor. $1.50 for a big jug of drinking water is about the best deal you can ask for. Watch the ants for a bit to find where they’re coming from inside your house. If there’s only a handful of ants that you see scattered about, those are usually scouts sent out to look for food. Put a cookie or some sugary food on the floor next to the ants you see. Once they spot the food and inspect it they’ll head back to the nest to alert the others. Follow the ants to find out where they’re coming from. It’s usually a crack under a cabinet or floor/wall edge. Mix 2 tablespoons of borax powder with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and then put the mixture in a bottle cap - fill the whole bottle cap to the rim. Leave the bottle cap right next to the spot where you saw the ants going back to. They’ll come out and start taking chunks of the borax/peanut butter back to their nest. The nest will eventually be wiped out once they start eating the peanut butter. Just make sure you don’t let your pets/kids near the area with the borax peanut butter.
