Yes, and that stuff led to cultural revolutions - you had the 20's gilded age (which largely involved a flouting of previously held values in favor of WOO PARTY) with the widespread usage of radio and the 60's sexual revolution coinciding with the home television set. Same thing happened with the printing press, too. It's all part of the same equation. People aren't equipped to deal with mass media because we were built to operate in small communities. Even so, it seems like such a small and simple feature that I can't imagine it had any notable impact on server performance. There's seems to be no real reason to have removed it. Unless the servers are just that bad, as noted by how out of date their shit is from the hack.

For example:

Old /sp/ is completely different from new /sp/ though, they all left for now-dead altchans like 76chan and endchan years ago.

None. The closest is probably still /s4s/ but it has declined absurdly badly over the last ~6 years. You can find vestiges in /wsg/, /v/, and /a/ sometimes, but they're too meta about "member when things were good?" to really be an accurate portrayal.
Also technically super dead boards like /po/ and /i/, I guess, but they lack the chaotic aspects due to being super dead and that was an important part of it.
