Even so, it seems like such a small and simple feature that I can't imagine it had any notable impact on server performance. There's seems to be no real reason to have removed it. Unless the servers are just that bad, as noted by how out of date their shit is from the hack.

Not useful as a samefag prevention tool in and of itself (they were gonna do it either way, doesn't matter that they'd show up as a new IP) but probably too useful as a samefag spotting tool, similar to how a bunch of boards clamor for thread IDs as a samefaggotry preventative and that one actually DOES work very well, but only bad actors and purists seem to care about whether or not IDs are present.

For example:
/jp/-tan is the loli with twin tails and round glasses,

and so on. Does anyone know if there is a booru or a place to take a peak at that part of each board culture?

Old /sp/ is completely different from new /sp/ though, they all left for now-dead altchans like 76chan and endchan years ago.

None. The closest is probably still /s4s/ but it has declined absurdly badly over the last ~6 years. You can find vestiges in /wsg/, /v/, and /a/ sometimes, but they're too meta about "member when things were good?" to really be an accurate portrayal.
Also technically super dead boards like /po/ and /i/, I guess, but they lack the chaotic aspects due to being super dead and that was an important part of it.
