it looks like the chinese girl used a trick that only works in certain cases, so, sure, she's "smarter" because she was taught the trick, but in most other cases she would have to use the method that the korean girl used. btw, another "trick" way to do it is: pretend it's 100 x 94 (you get 9400, easy peasy), then you know that it's just 3x94 less than that, but this is easy too because you just pretend it's 3x100 (300) less than that, so you get 9100, but you know that it was 3x6 higher than that, so you add 18 to get 9118. i imagine this is the full thought out way that the chinese girl's method uses. again, it is really only valuable/useful in certain situations (eg: where both numbers are close to 100). it really is useless when the numbers are lower than the 90's

Is much more simple than trying to teach Ancient Egyptian. It's easy for kids to understand multipication with numbers 10,100,1000 and so on. Learning long multiplication helps with e.g. 192*8 so in practice you only need to do that and add 192*20+192*100

And if 192*20 is difficult for a student they can do long multiplication with 2 and thus get the 384 which is then easy to multiply with 10.
So in this example you only have to do long multiplication by 8 and 2, write it down and then use 10 and 100.

Example
8*2=16 write down 6, put 1 in memory
8*9=72 add 1 from memory, makes 73
write down 3, add 7 in memory
8*1=8 add 7 from memory, makes 15
write down 15 and you get

It's about consistency and the fact that students start to trust their abilities. Learning Ancient Egyptian as some extra way isn't necessary a bad idea as long as it doesn't confuse students but it's certainly not a superior system in any way. It requires a lot more work and doing calculations in your head. Even the Ancient Egyptians had tables for most numbers so they wouldn't have to do them again, since they didn't have calculators. I just don't see how it would be a superior system. Do you teach kids?

The russian peasant/ancient egyptian method can be taught in a much simpler method for the sorts of small numbers that kids will work with in their every day life, and you can then work in the more advanced way I demonstrated later without changing anything. You start with Russian Peasant version, where you just halve one side and double the other, and then you teach them the egyptian method where they pull out powers of 2 and work with those to simplify it for larger numbers. I actually taught myself multiplication and division like that without realizing that it had been done before, because my family moved during the year we going to learn long division and multiplication, and the school I moved to had already taught it, while the school I moved from wasn't going to teach it until later in the year. So I sat there at my desk and worked out a way to multiply and divide, since my class had like a hundred students and asking for help wasn't going to accomplish anything. So if a little kid can figure it out on their own and get through college calculus without ever actually having learned long multiplication and division, then it should be fairly easy to teach.

Teaching is a science and the methods are constantly being reviewed. Your opinion seems a tad biased since it was your own way of learning due to moving and missing classes. I had to suffer from a bad teacher for some time, a narcissistic and stubborn teacher who called students stupid if they didn't get his "superior" system. His students started learning after the school got rid of him and replaced him with a proper math teacher who was a talented teacher. Long multiplication is the simplest thus best system for kids, in my experience, but I have nothing against historical systems as long as they don't interfere with properly evaluated systems. Students have different ways of learning, you found your own way, but for large masses it probably won't work. A good teacher usually sees if a student struggles with long multiplication and should be able to suggest historical systems and see if that helps. In our education system we learn long multiplication but we also do math with power of two, e.g. 2^2+2^4+2^8 and some teachers then explain historical systems and encourage students to try them.
