There was a not-insignificant portion of younger boomer and gen-x parents who literally did not parent their children. They thought ignoring them and only punishing them when they made mistakes was the same as actually supporting them and offering guidance. Instead, it just taught their kids how to navigate the system as it exists without making waves, but also without developing passion or drive to accomplish anything. These people have spent the last decade or so of their lives putting the pieces together and actually transitioning into the mental maturity their parents never helped cultivate, and now they're realizing how fucked everything was and how fucked they are now.

I want a big family but modern society makes it hard unless you want to be poor. I'm 33 with one kid and one more on the way soon. I make about 58k doing construction work because I got a useless college degree that my boomer parents heavily persuaded me would solve all my problems lol. I've got $1k in savings left after some car and medical emergencies, overweight and stressed, rent is almost $2000/mo in a suburban area when you include utilities. I spend a lot of my free time studying for certifications trying to break into an IT job, maybe networking or cybersecurity since I sort of enjoy those niches. But I also can't complain when I come home and am greeted by my wife and kid. Am I a loser? Probably.
