As someone who has worked in aerospace in Europe, I have always assumed that the usa sent 'someone' to the moon but the crew that was shown weren't the ones that went, so if the mission fucked up, they could CLAIM the crew everyone knew came back okay.
It IS possible there's a crashed lander on the lunar surface with two forgotten mericans in it and the orbiter came back with only one crew member in it. The rest the usa could have faked to appear successful to the world. Youd have to spend some time looking at the many many lunar samples that have been analyzed over the years all around teh world to settle the issue for yourself, but there was quite an extensive geological aspect, especially to the latter missions, one of which carried a trained geologist. the geologists got a lot out of apollo actually.
