But STEM is and has always been a field where you're middle class at best and unemployable at worst. The people who amass wealth in engineering or technology don't do it by engineering harder and better, but by moving to positions that can actually allow for you to do better (management, executive roles or starting a business). Rather, what we see is that the jobs without income ceilings tend to be the ones where the professional can directly impact the business' profits in a significant way (or if the profits go to his own pockets, in case he owns the business).
Lawyers, consultants, investment bankers, executives, these people are rewarded not because their jobs are more special than an engineer's in any way, but because they directly bring revenue when they get contracts/deals/sales/whatever. I went to a party about a year ago, and an old friend i haven't seen since 9 grade was there.

I didn't give him a good answer then, but i thought about it and I think being smart ultimately worked against me. I've never did any homework, and still got top grades. In college I would do hand in assignments in the lunch break, my grades where still pretty high, but no longer as high.
Without ever doing any work i went to university, where i began to struggle, i never learned to study and i didn't study there either. I had no routine and no "work ethic", my entire life my lack of applying myself had been a net positive, it was seen by my peers as proof of my intellect - "you got A, but anon got A without even opening the book".

People think they are smart and they also think people who don't show theyr intelligence are average. It's actually high iq move to make others think you are just normie. Also school is made for below average people. It's hard to get good grades as young high iq person, when you have energy but daily tasks are too easy. At the same time you should spend 2 hours on something that takes 5-15 minutes from you.

I had average grades because i skipped school. My grades were lowered because of attedance.
Later on I got my engineering papers in half of the time it usually takes while working full time. I try to fly under the radar and i have always made more money than people who were "better" than i was in school.
Hardest part for how iq people is that useless waiting while poor performers try to get simple things. In later education it gets easyer when you can just do things and get on with it.

I have tested over 98 precentile IQ. Now i sit in office doing over average salary and might actually be paid similiar salary as 20 years older people in here. No one I know has anywere near similiar background and as wealthy as I am. Wealthier people are eather +20 years older or inherited.

I have no other conclusion than it takes higer IQ to find your way in here in this timeframe. It gets lonely tough. People I grew up with are 10-15 years late in everything.

I tower over all my normie friends in wealth and achievements and I am still a miserable loner. I've started envying those beneath me that have friends and a girlfriend while I work 90 hours weeks making money. I'm even asking myself if it's worth it all.

That's what determines success or failure in life. The willpower, tenacity and courage to succeed and be somebody. It doesn't matter how smart you are if you don't have the balls to put your intelligence and skills to good use, overcome challenges, and not give up when you encounter setbacks.

Yeah... I took on an internship at a startup and wanted to shoot myself. I took a day off because I was so depressed that this was what my life would look like if I kept going. Granted the work was repetitive and I could have done better since I was copypasting code the entire time but it scared me away from applying to startups.

Then my last salaried position, the first 5 minutes I started working, I wanted to leave. I kept telling everyone I was a poor fit, even the founder of the company. The founder gave some pathetic response on how he was traveling the world with his girlfriend at my age, but back at the home company, unbeknownst to me, he confided in my supervisor that I was never going to leave because they paid me too much.

Like others have said, there are many reasons for this. The biggest one is that our economy and culture don't reward intelligence. All the fame and money and connections go to socially skilled, popular personalities. Nobody gives a fuck about some chemist with decades of experience slaving away in a lab developing cutting edge drugs to treat disease--they care about their favorite YouTuber, or a leader who can boss all the wagies around most effectively and generate more revenue, or the hottest person in a room.

And the other reason is our education system in the US is a meme designed to siphon as much money as possible out of the population while making them go through an elaborate and ultimately artificial ritual of self masturbatory group-think involving solving problems that dont exist and conducting "research" the purpose of which is to simply demonstrate mastery of academic culture. I have coasted through every single degree program I have ever been in without having to once actually demonstrate true proficiency or learn anything of practical value. And I'm a fucking nurse (soon to be nurse educator). Being a good student has almost nothing to do with real-world performance. It's gotten so bad that hospitals have had to develope entire "residency" programs that are multiple months long because they need to COMPLETELY RETRAIN nursing grads because the stupid fucks spent $50k learning how to write papers about muh racism in healthcare and muh "nursing theory" (it's made up it's not even real).

Basically: everything is fake and gay. Money and popularity are all that matter. If you can use your IQ to take money from people or entertain them then you're golden. I worked at a research hospital for a year after college and my boss beat it into my head that I should go for my Master's.

I didn't want to relive all those sleepless nights so I ignored him. But I was well aware that I had a quarter of a degree at that point.

The world isn't a meritocracy, in fact it's largely random. But to have any sort of chance at all motivation, morale, socialisation and luck are far more important than intelligence. I'm a pretty smart dude - like invited to join Mensa in high school smart - and one of the first realizations I had as an edgy teenager in the early 2000s was that the system was entirely rigged. After 10 years of that I no longer really need to work, but I do anyway because as I say, I enjoy it.
These specific realizations - the rejection of the modern work environment, the long years of trying and failing at this and that, the yeeting funds into the void because I know it's the only way to actually have a chance of winning - were each fundamental to my success, and they felt like failure at every step until the last one.
That's why I say no, I'm not surprised that smart people fail. The system is working as intended when they fail. It's not enough to be intelligent, you must also have the INSIGHT to understand SPECIFICALLY what to do to beat the system, and then you must ACT.

I worked in an industry that I believe is very typical and I experienced this directly and it is pretty universal. People are mostly promoted for their ability to crawl on their bellies and simp for management rather than competency. The more competent people are the more critical they will be of incompetence.
