why is LibreOffice Calc so fucking shitty in 2025?
I am comparing current LibreOffice Calc with Excel 2003.

excel 2003 (in wine) is super fast and renders about 600 x 40 cells immediately.
LibreOffice renders them at 3 to 4 fps.
wtf?
can you make libreoffice calc render faster? it feels throttled.
it can't be this bad can it? or can it?

Are you implying that Microsoft could be responsible for, in theory of course, throttling libreoffice code by strongarming or financial benefiting the The Document Foundation, which is a non-profit that runs development ?

Anyway, interesting perspective

It doesn't matter because I'm not fucking subscribing for something that used to come free with every computer.

You dont have to subscribe to use office 2003.
Its just a classic progam that works really well.

I've got a bootlegged copy of Office 2024 running perfectly on my MacBook. There's no reason to use LibreOffice unless you're on Linux.

No problems, I recorded it, but the video was 93MB. I'll see if I can cut it down.

I have it installed directly from the libreoffice rpms. They have .debs also.

Damn you’re also doing your stupid crypto taxes on that thing?
Guess no one wants to pay microsoft for its gay software.

ryzen 9900x, I don't know what other component could affect performance unless you were extremely ram constrained since excel works fine

Good bait, but wrong board. Try >>>/g/
Haven’t used libreoffice but can confirm gnumeric also performs like shit.

OP here.
On my 12 year old laptop, libreoffice is very sluggish...

A sqlite database and Python to interact with the data mogs both. There's no excuse now that AI can just write the code for you.

i was gonna suggest gnumeric because it's more lightweight than calc, might do things faster

yeah i don't have much to use it for, (i refuse to use excel) but its insane how much resources libreoffice calc uses
i only use it for minor CSV editing for contract work flows

Am I still on /biz/? But yeah libreoffice sucks ass I know you probably want something FOSS but I’ve just completely switched to Google Sheets, it just works. If you’re working with sensitive data like private keys I wouldn’t recommend it though. I typically just use python and a database for all my data manipulation but I’m a brainlet who never really learned excel

It is definitely something on OP's end. I just tried that same large spreadsheet on a laptop with a n4500 running fedora and the only difference was that it opened slower.

The only other thing I could think of is that maybe there are some computationally intensive formulas in his spreadsheet. The one I was testing with is essentially just numbers in each block.
Anonymous (ID: zgwnr+Oj) No.61095913 [Report]
>>61095627
Its not about distro.
everything else runs just fine.

Its probably just my laptop which is not pulling the load on libreoffice.

I tried with older openoffice version and its the same as i always remember it. slow to render.
now, gnumeric is superfast, immediate.
Feels like office 2007 or something which is fast enough.
office 2003 is even faster.
anyway
Gnumeric does the job flawlessly and i don't have to use wine.

problem solved.

>>61095861
No, there are no intensive formulas.
its just that libreoffice is an unoptimized piece of crap.

As long as you run recent hardware, you don't notice the slowdown, the further back you go, it goes down a cliff pretty quickly.
Thats my take on it.
Its not new, I always remember Libreoffice not being exactly snappy.
