i always go to conventions alone, usually in lolita, but i'm thinking about cosplaying for the first time next con.
i've had people compliment my coords before, but they never seem interested in anything further ... usually someone will come up to me, say something nice, and return to their friends.
i also live in a small town in north carolina so there's not much of a community here, in terms of EGL (as far as i know...) and i can't travel far to attend any of the really big conventions like galaxycon, because for one - i don't have the money ... and two - i have to be driven ... and my father won't drive me very far.
it's honestly pointless for me to attend cons at this point because i end up spending money on admission just to buy one or two things, and then play DDR by myself for three hours ... help .. someone ...

yeah cosplaying is important but also find other lolitas

Just don't talk to furries, bronies or anyone who wears a medical mask. Femboys are in a gray area, but I wouldn't talk to them either.

Story time: So I love lolita fashion, but you girlies are scary. One time I saw someone in lolita at the con, I had JUST learned about like 3 types of lolita styles, asked "I like your coords! is that sweet lolita?" Her face turned into pure hatred and it turned out to be Hime or something and she basically told me to eat shit and die for daring to suggest it was sweet lolita lol. From then on, its been "I like your coords" and running away

Sad- I live in the triangle and do galaxycon + Animate! every year. If you ever get the chance to go, its worth it. I prefer Animate! better as its less crowded, but no denying galaxycon is where you'll find the best cosplays.

My suggestion? Anytime someone comes up to compliment you, and they don't seem like they are crazy/will become your stalker/etc, try to keep the conversation going. A lot of people don't want to be nuisances, but would be more than happy to have a convo. That's generally what I do at cons when cosplaying.

I will say, cosplaying opens up the world of socialization. When I go normally dressed, absolutely zero interactions. When I go in cosplay, people are constantly coming up for pictures, to say hi, to rant about their favorite show, and its almost a cheat code for the hardest part of socialization: Starting the conversation. Totally worth it if you want to have more conversations and make more connections.
Another tip...if you connect with someone socially, ask for their instagram. A lot of cosplayers want to get recognized, so they'll generally be happy to give it.

Really though the answer is to get money and a car (i.e. get a job, which I know is hard these days) so you can have your own independent social life.

bro how that's #1 the method I use to make friends at cons, there are tons of people who go to cons just to play DDR and spend their entire time at the con at the DDR machine
