I all but guarantee that the original Temperance Movement had no one of any alternative sexualities in it. If it did, they would certainly not be "open" about it at the time.

With the technology of a hundred years ago, sure. It would also require a culture-wide dedication to sobriety, which would inevitably put caffeine in the crosshair, and that might be more unrealistic (read: difficult) to promote than mobilizing the surveillance state for a good cause for once.
