Look British to me, Aussies and NZers don't really say "Bangers & Mash" and you'd hardly ever see a sausage pie, they prefer mince/steak and cheese or bacon and egg.

American here: What are "bangers" You're using the term interchangeably with sausage. So they're sausages I guess? What distinguishes bangers from other kinds of sausage?

from a historical standpoint, sausages have to be pork and have a certain percentage of pork in them, i believe 32% is the minimum. so companies would refer to these "sausages" as bangers instead, to skirt the law, and people still associated them with proper sausages. but poor people cant be fussy

these days, banger is simply another word for (pork) sausages, but we do still have the law on how much meat it needs to have in it

english for reference, as it is our slang

>these days, banger is simply another word for (pork) sausages, but we do still have the law on how much meat it needs to have in it
I'm a little confused here. Are you saying bangers have to be over 32% pork by law? Or they don't have to be 32% pork by law?
If they do have to be over 32% pork, then what distinguishes bangers from sausage? Like the OP's image shows them side by side. What, as an Englishman, would you assume is the difference?

pork sausages need 32% or more to be referred to as pork sausages
any pork sausage with less than 32% is a banger. the distinction is the lack of meat in a legal sense. not many people these days distinguish between them at all, if they are even aware of why a banger was called a banger.

in regard to OP's image, "bangers and mash" is a cheap dinner mothers would feed their kids, would be nostalgic to people and if it said "sausage and mash", i would probably think theyre twats.

their "banger" pie might genuinely be good sausage, as you can still call a good quality sausage a banger, youd have to check with them

Low quality sausages (bangers) have high water content so they pop/bang while cooking, hence

I never gave much thought about what is inside of a sausage. My assumption was that it was just pork and seasoning. What else could be inside of a sausage, if not pork? Other cheaper meat? Potatoes? Vegetables?

LMAO That is absolutely, unequivocally wrong in every single way. Holy shit, I cannot stress how fucking wrong you are.
The reason they were called 'bangers' back in the day had nothing to do with any kind of 'legal definition'.
The origin of the term 'bangers' is from Britain in WW2 and it came about because butchers would cut corners and fill them with loads of water and other fillers. The water would boil, expand and that would make them literally explode in the pan when you would cook them. Hence the term: 'bangers'.
Comments like yours honestly make me sad for the future. There are so many neat historical facts that will forever be lost because some idiot on the Internet decided they were going to make up a bullshit story instead of just doing a simple five second Google search to actually find out if they had a single fucking clue what they were talking about. You were worse than wrong - you were actively erasing history by falsely professing to know anything about the subject in the course of being wrong.
