I used to travel to Michigan for work. The only food I had there that I really enjoyed was the Lebanese takeout and those weird pepperoni rolls you guys have.

Those are the cities. About 50 years ago, those cities were filled with factories and everyone who lived there worked in those factories. They were mostly white but a lot of blacks from the south migrated there after the civil war because of the new factory jobs. Then, starting in the 1970s, the factory owners decided that having Chinese people do those jobs for 10% of the cost was better, so they closed down the factories. The original whites and intelligent blacks, now jobless, simply left to other places that still had jobs. That's why a ton of those cities have lost about half their population by now. But the rest of the blacks stayed, even though there was nothing to do, and simply demanded welfare. Welfare was given, and now there have been several generations of blacks who have survived on welfare living there. Yes, I know it sounds unbelievable, but this is a 100% accurate summary.

Drove up there every day for pool deliveries. Up near the lake they have a cherry festival which is fantastic. And as you get to the west side you start seeing those cheese and meat stands everywhere. Loved my Michigan deliveries! Fuck Detroit! It's like that everywhere. The City of Atlanta is has lots of nice areas and blacks are only a plurality now. Los Angeles isn't all homeless and warring Central American gangs. Most of Portland isn't strung out hipster gutter punks.
The cost of living in metro Detroit is well below the national average, especially for an urban area. If you're a white collar professional or a skilled factory worker, you can make a very good living but are unlikely to end up wealthy, just upper middle class. Living in a Detroit suburb is almost like having a cheat code. And part of why it's that way is because outsiders don't see it as a place to move and "start over" like they do with states like Florida that get flooded with all manner of maladjusted social rejects trying to find a community to take care of them. Don't ruin it by attracting them out of a need to have external validation.
The food scene is good for average folks. You're not getting a bunch of nationally rated destination restaurants but for day to day living, there's plenty of quality variety. I suspect that people in Birmingham sometimes travel elsewhere to get their fix of high end dining but for most people, it's not an issue.

I thought the coney island dogs were pretty good, and I had coffee at two interesting coffee shops and sat on a patio and had like a swedish potato bread with sour cream at a hipster cafe somewhere downtownish

I rented a bike there once near happy italians I wanna say and I had to go around this massive military base by the water, and by the time I did the battery was kinda drained from the e-bike I rented
What I remember most is how undulating the roads were from all the frost heave damage

Oh, I forgot about pasties. I guess they're more of an upper peninsula thing but there were a few places near Livonia. Superior Pasties was good, reminded me of Cornish pasties a little bit. Old school place, cash only when I went.
