It's good because it's cheap ASF while still being safe to drink. Thailand is kinda there but it's far less safe for you to be drunk.
Nothing has blown me away so far but it's just a great baseline.

>Is there any Japanese alcoholic beverage worth trying?
No. Not if you live in the USA, because they all sold out to globohomo. "Sapporo" in America is brewed in Canada (look it up). "Asahi" in America is brewed in fucking Italy (no shit, look it up). And that ridiculous Suntory "196" shit is domestic trash, doesn't have a single thing in common with actual Strong Zero.
>b-but they use the same Honorabu Japanese Recipe...
Fuck off, not even the water is Japanese. Don't be a sucker, don't pay the weeabo tax for fake "imports" just because they put a few moon runes on the can.

If you want real Japanese booze, i.e. actually made in Japan by pure Nipponese waifus from pure Japanese ingredients nourished by the healing waters of Fukushima, you're probably looking at whiskeys. But read the label because these corporate international conglomerate globohomo smallhat FUCKS cannot be trusted.

lived in japan for five years, and can confidently say that you have never had japanese beer if you are buying it outside of japan. the sapporo/asahi/kirin you get in japan is made in japan and consumed there, and then they have breweries in light italy that produce the international "versions" of asahi for example, i think sapporo is done in canada? specifically that silver can in OP's image, that does not exist within Japan, that is an international version and the flavor really sucks. same with asahi, same with kirin. any of those you buy outside of japan fucking sucks and they dont care cause you'll buy it anyway. you need to actually visit japan to have the real version.

whiskey is different, you're getting the real thing with that but most here can hardly afford it anyway so what does it matter. anyways, pic related is my favorite beer in japan made by sapporo called "premium yebisu" (don't pronounce the Y). there's also a black version, which is a little rare since japanese have VERY aligned taste in beer (only like light beer, high balls and lemon sours basically, anything outside of that that isn't just straight liquor is rare). basically the cocktail scene in japan sucks compared to really cool bars/mixed drinks you can find in places like Taipei where the bartenders are actually creative. japanese bartenders, not always but like 95% of the time, are either hilarious dudebros at dartbars or massive, uptight turds cosplaying some weird british classy bartending character that does not exist outside of their caricature lmao.

Orion is a pretty tasty beer, yebisu premium malt is nice too. i really hated some of the low malt beer like drinks i tried, forget what they're called but after a handful of those i finally understood what people mean when they say they feel bloated after drinking
i like lemon sours/strong zero/chuhai stuff in general, tasty, easy drinking
i dont know very much about sake but when i was over there i was just ordering stuff that the staff recommended at izakayas and bars and i enjoyed most of it

I like Awamori.
Its basically impossible to get outside of Japan though.
The appeal of sake and Japanese whiskies is they're supposed to be cheap.
$3 for a 3L box of sake or $9 for a 1L bottle of your local inaka distillery's drop.
They jewed everyone too hard on mark-ups so no-one buys that shit overseas except Japanese expats lonely for home, weaboo gaijin and richfags trying to humblebrag about expensive alcohol.
They did the same with BOSS Coffee. The whole point of it was it was $1 for a can and you could get it everywhere.
When it came out in the west its $4-5 for a can and you can only get it in supermarkets.

I like Shochu, I recommend it if you have the chance. It's pretty cheap in Japan for reasonable bottles. The cheapest stuff is gutrot, but there's a lot of variety. Pictured here is a 10 dollar bottle I think is quite solid.
If you're ever in Hokkaido, Sapporo Classic is good, basic beer.

I find a lot of chuhai to be closer to gut rot than shoju. Though some brands seem to be okay. They're mostly pretty neutral, though that umeboshi one on the bottom is super fucking sweet. As are the peach ones. I think those ones are gross. Stick to citrus, or just plain chuhai. There's this kind that comes in a bronze can that's very neutral. I don't see it in your picture. I might just go buy a can.

I drank with a few salary men at an izakaya a few times. Pretty mild.

I dunno, traveling for a month or two at a time constantly moving sometimes you just want a cheap 30 dollar room, a grocery across the street to get booze and watch TV till late night anime comes on.

At least a night or two off your feet nude in the business hotel to wash clothes in the sink and hang dry over the A/C. Fun night and cheap as hell and often get a free delicious buffet breakfast with it to get you on your way.

Shochu can be enjoyed in many different ways depending on how you drink it.
It is really fun to change the way you drink it depending on the temperature.
Hot water with shochu is a great first drink on a cold day.

And the hot water one (naninani mizuchu... I think) I was doing a lot over the winter. Which, in Hokkaido is 8 months long.

>Oyuwari
Pour hot water into a mug or teacup and add shochu afterwards
For an unusual method
>Maewari
Mix shochu and water for the next day's drink (or a week or more later)
The water and shochu will be more combined and smooth
This is done the same way with whiskey.

I see. Seeing the name oyuwari, I can take a guess at the characters. Seems straight forward.
But yeah, I did the former one a lot. I've heard of that one where you do it in a pot and let it sit a long while, but haven't had it yet. Next time I go to Kyushu I would like to do a shochu run.

Of the two I have tried both Sapporo and Kirin I find Kirin to be a much better Dinner beer with sushi. Sapporo is much better as a sipper but I almost never buy Nippon beer outside of restaurants.
