>>21411600Nope. Latin is but one of many Italic languages and it's one of the reasons why so many Italian "dialects" (ovvero, lingue) are not mutually intelligible: they're descended of or heavily influenced by other Italic languages besides Latin, like Umbrian, Faliscan and Venetic. There are others. Neapolitan, for example, is Latin-based but heavily influenced by Oscan, an Italic cousin language to Latin which mostly died out with the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum (though it was already subsumed by Latin at that point and there were no monolingual speakers left). Its closest relative, Umbrian, is also extinct. Some Oscan qualities surviving in Neapolitan to this day are a strong tendency towards rhotacism and the survival of Oscan's much more complex declension system compared to Latin's.
Did you honestly think Latin was the only language spoken in ancient Italy?
