why over rice?
I'd have had crusty bread and butter, or a soft challah roll with mine

i didnt have crusty bread. and it was pretty good with rice. Also the bacon i used was actually mostly fat chunks. Fat doesnt have a lot of protein. rice and beans eaten together is a complete protein. I donate plasma so i need to worry about that

>rice and beans eaten together is a complete protein
The complete proteins thing is largely a myth and bread has the same protein profile as rice. Rice and beans are a great combination, but I think more northern European style bean soups go better with bread.

They're not beans, but you also don't have to soak them overnight so you can cook them without planning ahead. Yes, I know you can cook beans without soaking them, but they take longer and they're not as good as soaked.

ive never noticed a difference between soaked and unsoaked. I use a pressure cooker so cook time isnt really different

You do need to soak them but only if you want to reduce cooking time and the amount of gas during digestion

slavic yuros have this concept of "remains of the pantry"
dried beans, lentils, peas and (non-rolled) oats
add some fresh veggies, potatoes and maybe some smoked meat and you have the heartiest soup

It looks pretty good, but too high carb/protein ratio would be my only criticism. Beans, carrots, rice are all carbs and it seems like that makes up the bulk of the soup

If you want to use them as a topping (talkos or burritos, etc) then just heat them and slop them on.

The option I would choose is to dump that can into a cup of dry rice and simmer it until the rice is cooked. Add some seasonings and a stock cube and you got yourself some proper ricin'beans
